You can see my post a little ways back and all the problems I had. What I have done now is reformatted my hardrive (youch!) and started with a fresh install of WIN98SE. Now all the error problems and registry problems and corrupt file problems are gone (yeah!)

Now I want to ask any of you "experts" how do I get my monitor back to how it was before?

I am by default running the monitor with the WIN98SE standard PCI graphics adapter driver. My screen is very poor resolution and I can't adjust the pixils at all. They are stuck at 640 X 480.

I used to have 256 colors and way better resolution....but of course that was with 5 years of trial & error and upgrades and tweaks and advice....

    thanks in advance...

    Hi D

You need to install drivers for your graphics adapter. Do you have the drivers from your old install?
If you don't have them, you will need to find the graphics make and model and get drivers from the net.
Aida32 may be able to identify it:

    I downloaded the aida32...

and not knowing what I am doing, guessed that the video adapter I have is a SiS Integrated Video Adaptor running with a Graphics Integration 5597 Chipset from a generic windows driver named vga.drv

Their is an updated driver for the 5597 chipset. Is that what I need to download and run?

    DevilDog,

I'm sure we can get you up and running, but a couple of questions first.

You have an integrated graphics chip on your mobo - do you have a mobo CD? These generally contain specific drivers needed for the board to operate, including a video driver if it is not one supplied on the Win 98SE CD - these tend to be very basic/out of date, etc.

If you have the CD - run it and look for video drivers.

If not try the mobo manufacturer's web site
Is this exactly what Aida reported? - if so download and run the SiS5597 update (597v113.exe)

I fount this on the internet...

    PeteC:

I found besides the updated driver another file that is suggested to download...it is a Win98 Video Bios TSRv1.13 file, and it states
"this onboard VGA BIOS is generally needed when using the version 1.13 driver with Windows 98. After downloading 597v113.exe, enter the DOS command line in Windows....then talks about adding it to the autoexec.bat file...sound OK and is that complicated for a novice like me?

Go to the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and click on the Windows Setup tab. Select Accessories and click the Details button. Put a checkmark in whatever you want to add, you'll need the WIN98 CD, OK out
