So on my XP Professional System, I am 'guilty' :) of downloading the patches that M$ sends my way - here's the kicker - every patch takes an extrordinary amount of time to install.

It dowloads in a zip with my DSL connection but the time between the installation and it's completion is literraly long enough cook steaks. Every patch takes between 20 and 30 mins to install

This happens regardless if leave the machine alone while it is installing or play a few frames of quick snooker.

Nothing else lags on the machine, only the update installation.

It's an XP1800; 256MB PC2100 DDR; 128MB DDR GeForce FX 5200; 40GB ATA100 Maxtor drive. Only things in system tray are AVG, Zone Alarm and volume control.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Cheers,

    ICE

Without knowing if you have any residual files and settings from programs you've had on the system, I'd assume there is some garbage in your registry.

I won't pick on the Athlon, although it's tempting being an Intel guy, (just kidding :D ), but I have much less of a problem with updates than you and you sincerely have a faster system than I do.

Try a search on this website for regclean and reg* if that will bring more results. I have seen them in posts on the Hardware section of the BBS, but I can't remember under what heading.

Please let me know if this helps.

    Alan

Well, I browsed the BBS and gave RegSeeker a try - it found no less than 2578 items on it's first pass - After reading through the entire list there was only about 4 or 5 that I didn't remove - the rest were orphaned paths and file types.

I never thought about registry bloat - since it has happened in every other version of windows I'm still trying to figure out why I didn't equate that as a possible issue in XP.

So, well see on the next update - if the time has been reduced any.

    Thanks

    Ice,
