    Hi,
I am working on a old computer something I have never even heard of :) anyways it has 2 USB ports in back and I am trying to install a printer (Lexmark X63)..when I plug in the printer as advised by the manual, the puter does not see it or nor does it try to build a driver. Do I need to set something for that? any help would be greatly appreciated. OS is WIN98SE

Check that the BIOS supports USB and that it is enabled.

    Hi.

I think the USB drivers in Win98SE are dummy drivers and doesn't do anything. (I might be thinking of Win95.) You need to download full drivers for the USB and install them. That should do it. Microsoft should have them.

Not so, Giles - the USB drivers in 98SE are fully functional :)

    Firedancer

Go into Device Manager - you should see Universal Serial Bus Controllers and the end of the list.

If they are flagged with an Exclamation Mark in a yellow triangle there is a problem there.

If not the problem lies elsewhere.

Did you check the BIOS ??

I am not familiar with the Lexmark, but for my Epson 1270 it is necessary to load the drivers, etc with the printer switched off and then to follow a wizard to switch on the printer and let it be found.

Takea look in the printer manual - if you have it - if not try their website.

One thing to try, unplug the printer, install the drivers, replug printer. If you don't have drivers, go to Mfg's website, find the drivers for your printer and OS, download and install, then plug in the printer.

As stated earlier, make sure of BIOS settings, enabled plug & play. and usb.

    Hey All,

I do not see bus cotrolers in device manager anywhere..

I installed the printer drivers and all went well but the puter does not see the printer at all when plugged in. I belive I need to install usb drivers for windows to make the card work. I have checked bios and at last look the usb was enabled. I am stummped. I am not sure what I need at this point. Windows does not show usb devises installed in device manager. You think this might be a motherboard problem or a windows problem? or maybe a usb card problem?

Did you look in the BIOS to see if Plug & Play is enabled? Somehow my machine's BIOS settings got changed to non plug & play machine, I swear I didn't do it. But it caused all kinds of install problems until I accidentally found the changed setting and reset it.

Quite possibly - it would seem that it is not being recognised by Windows. The USB drivers are in the Win install.

You could try removing it - rebooting - shut down - replace the card and reboot and see if Win finds it. Seems unlikely.

Have you another USB card you could temporarily substitute?

Or try the card in another m/c?

I had similar problems under windows98se. after lots of beer then tylenol the next day a friend suggested an add-on card. it seems that the usb support on board many motherboards does not really want to do the job. after using the add-on card everything, printer included, works without fail.

my suggestion would be belkin, but i'm sure any reputable companys card would work fine.

    hope this helps.

    Hi all.

I think you need to download the proper driver for that USB port. You'll probably find it at your motherboard's support site. The driver should be specific for your particular motherboard.

Look for these files on that m/c - they are the USB drivers

    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\usbhub.sys
    C:\Windows\System\VMM32.vxd

and maybe these - if it is an Intel chipset

    C:\Windows\System\usbui.dll
    C:\Windows\System32\usbd.sys

If they are not present I would suggest a reload of 98SE

If they are present it points to a problem with the USB card? Are we clear that it is a USB card and not mobo USB ports?

Can you run the printer through a parallel port - or is it USB only.

    Hi all,

Sorry took so long to get back been very busy. Yes USB is enabled in BIOS and yes it is a card and not mobo. I am starting to belive that it is a card problem. I have loaded all usb drivers for the specific printer and for windows98 in and still nothing.

This particular MB is a Amptron PII and I am currently searching for info on it. I want to thank you all for your replys and suggestions and when something pans out I will once again let you know...

I am going to pick up another usb card from a friend tonight and try that one as well in hopes it will work and confirm my suspicions about the present card.

PeteC.. yes it is USB only

    Regards,
    ..still searching...
