I need to get a new cable modem (DOCSIS) compatible. Does anyone have an opinion as to which one is the best. I am using a RCA DCM235, and every time it is touched or looked at it resets.

Why not just go with one your cable ISP has available? It will have to work properly because they will support it.

I thought there may be a difference, one may be better than the other, etc... I was hoping to find one that was maybe faster?

Actually WFC_Exile may be right. I bought a Toshiba because I didn't want to rent and pay more than the purchase price. I do know that some (the Motorola surfboard cable modem) can be "unlocked" to exceed the prescribed bandwidth, but the company providing your service may get offended at this.

If you want to ensure compatability but don't want to rent their modem, find out what they are using and buy one of your own.

    Pros and cons again.

I have rented my Cable Modem forn the begining.

Not only to get one that may be more compatable with the Compnay but I have also been able to get mine upgraded when they either upgrade to newer or change Brands.

At first I had a Motorola surfboard . That was giving me problems.

A Tech was installing a new service next door and I spoke to him about having problems. He just asked what Modem I had and said " NO Wonder " 1/2 hour later I had a brand new RCA Cable modem with NO CHARGE.

Atually the whole thing made me laugh. The tech called the company and told them the problem. They told him he would need to come back another day.

What came next was actually unbeliveable. I heard him tell them that was IDIOTIC. I am here. I have extra Modems and it will take about 5 minutes. If I can't fix it for the customer, then I will just give him the Modem and he can bring the old one in at HIS convenience. But actully all he did was step in the house, hand me the Modem, finished the job he was on and went back with my old modem. He just wrote down some numbers.

I called my cable company, I was told that any DOCSIS compatible modem would work. They do not recommend a specific modem. We are really getting of my main question. Which is the best DOCSIS compatible cable modem?

If a certain modem can be cracked to bring up the speed I would certainly be interested!

I was visiting out in San Diego Ca. I connected to Cox Cable.
I was getting speeds in the 5 to 6 Mb range!
Here in Montgomery Al. with Knology I get 1500 Kbps down and 380 Kbps up.
I have my own server and the 380 up ***** but Knology's competitor Charter is even worse! they have a cap on upstream of 128k !!

I think your speeds are excellent. T1 is 1440 and you are 1500. I also think your up stream is acceptable also.
    My link test out at:
Communications - 1.7 megabits per second
Storage - 203.4 kilobytes per second
    1MB file download - 5 seconds

    Tests can be made here:

Just a quick note, I'm connected to Cox Cable and at first rented the cable modem from them. I had nothing but problems with their setup, I was losing connection to the internet several times a day and the only way to get it back was to unplug the cable modem for at least 30 seconds and when I plugged it back in I had to unplug the cable from the wal and ***** it back in again. I even had Cox come out and check the cable and replace the cable modem, nothing helped.

I finally got tired of paying for the cable modem and went out and bought my own, I knew the guy at the store and he had sold quite a few cable modems that he knew for certain would work with Cox so I went with his recomendation and bought a D-Link. Since then I've only lost connection once or twice in the last 6 months and each time it came back on it's own.

The moral of this story is that just because you rent the cable modem from the cable company doesn't mean it's going to work with your system.
