I'm removing temp files using deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1 command.
160 minutes later, it's still going. There's either a helluva lot of files, or it's stuck. The hard drive is still being read by the sound and red light.
    Is this an abnormal thing?

    Pent2 350.

    Pent 350.

Yes this is very possible. You may have a hundred thousand (they could even be zero length files) at the DOS level this is a slow process.

The deltree can del troublesome files that windows can not so is usefull.

Windows can del most of these much faster.

I would ctrl alt del out. Boot to safe mode, browse to the temp folder do a CtrlA to hilite the hit "Shift DEL" the shift bypasses the recycle bin. After deletion, empty the recycle bin and boot back to dos and do the deltree again. It will now get all that windows could not and quickly.

Also, before running the deltree command, run smartdrv. When you run it, you won't see anything happen but it should help speed up the deltree process a bit.

When in Windows, make sure that "Show All Files" is selected on the "View" tab of View --> Options. This will make it go faster in Dos later, as there will be less for deltree to delete.

This works in IE5.5 and IE6.0.

You don't have to go to DOS to delete Tempor~ Just go to C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 and delete the Content.IE folder. It will recreate itself on the next bootup.

Before you do it right click on the TIF and check properties then after you delete it and recreates check it. Do the same using DOS and you will see the same results.

    Good!

Now next time do this first and you will be able to Scandisk and defrag in only moments.

This deep clean will not only help with scanning and defragging but also help the general performance and stability in windows.

Get the WinME defrag (one good thing from Win ME) replace the win 98 defragger in c:\windows

    Here: http://www.boogiejack.com/software/winmedefrag.zip

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

    Cleanups
These are for 95 98 ME only!

Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

Type these commands exactly hit enter at the end (do not type the notes that are in parenthesis like this).

deltree /y c:\*.swp _______(may get file not found, is ok)
    del c:\windows\*.swp
    deltree /y c:\windows\shelli*.*
deltree /y c:\windows\temp\*.*______(answer yes to all) "ALL "
    deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*
    deltree /y c:\windows\history\*.*
    deltree /y c:\wimdows\taskmon.exe
    deltree /y c:\wimdows\applog
    deltree /y c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*

Back to Windows then a scan & defrag.

    Good luck!

    Mike
