NOTE THIS IS A SECOND POST. THE FIRST IS "wininet.dll" Problem on Other Software.

    eMachineShop software problem
    problem encountered on 8/31/03
eMachineShop (http://www.eMachineShop.com/) is a small cad program that allows design of a part for quotation and eventual maching by eMachineShop, all via the internet. It reportedly allows import of *.dxf files as well.
Their website says: "eMachineShop is the remarkable new way to get the custom parts you need. Download our free software, draw your part, and click to order - it's that easy! Your part will be machined and delivered. Even better, your cost is low due to the internet, software, and automated machines. Why waste time traveling, calling, faxing or emailing to conventional machine shops? Reduce your total time up to 90% and open doors to new products and projects! Intelligent design software gives instant exact pricing, expert feedback, and unrivaled convenience. "
    Their instructions are as follows:
Downloading the eMachineShop software is quick and easy. Requires Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, NT, or XP. 3.4mb The download link below runs a download utility.
Run Download Now (http://www.12321.com/ftp/emachineshop/EMSDownloader.exe). This is a small setup file about 120KB in size.
Wait for the download to finish. Follow screen instructions. Double click on the desktop icon (Which I didn't Get) for eMachineShop (not EMSDownloader). Enjoy eMachineShop!
In case of difficulty downloading try here: (http://www.12321.com/ftp/emachineshop/emachineshop.exe). This is where I eventually downloaded emachineshop.exe file of about 4.26 MB in size.
    My Problem:
I first downloaded the EMSDownloader.exe, but got no icon on my desktop as they said I would.
So, I downloaded the larger emachineshop.exe file, double-clicked to install. Installation went fine and program reported that installation was completed successfully.
But, when I click the shortcut I get two error messages:
    1) "C:\Program Files\emachineshop\emachineshop.exe: A device attached to the system is not functioning. "
    2) "emachineshop.exe file is linked to missing export wininet.dll: InternetAutodial. "
However my c:\windows\system folder does have a wininet.dll, dated 1996.
    My System:
200 MHz Pentium running W95b with MS Plus and Office 97, 64 MB RAM, 922 MB free on C-partition, 56K V.90 dialup modem, SBC PacBell Internet ISP, Netscape 4.78 and Opera 7.1.
Is it possible that I need a more current issue of wininet.dll? If so, where can I get it?
I tried control panel>internet>connection>checked "connect as needed" for my ISP dialer, but since I have Microsoft Mes-saging in Startup (for the fax function only) when I boot, it dials my ISP, which is no good.
I tried disabling Messaging and checking "connect as needed" but the same two error messages appear.

    Anyone have any ideas?
    Larry

In Windows Messaging go to Tools, then Options. Click on the Services tab, remove Internet Mail and Microsoft Mail. The Fax will still work.

It is not that the file is missing as you know, it is because it is the wrong version. You didn't mention the version of Internet Explorer you have, but the latest you can put on 95b is IE 5.5 SP2. That file is part of IE.
Be sure to update the Outlook Express when installing, else you will miss a critical update, even if you do not use OE.
    All versions of IE

    Thanks markp62:

I'll give the messaging settings a try.

But, I don't have any version of IE or Outlook installed.

I generally use Netscape 4.78 for internet and e-mail along with my SBC PacBell ISP.

Where, or how, can I get an updated wininet.dll if I refuse to install any version of IE or Outlook?

    Thanks,
    Larry

Internet Mail and Microsoft Mail are not listed in Tools>Options>Services. Only listings are Fax, Address Book and Personal Folders.

Tried going back to Control Panel>Connections>enabled "connect as needed" to my ISP.

Rebooted. This time it didn't dial my ISP on boot but it didn't resolve the problem either.

    Best,

The description of wininet.dll is Internet Extensions for Win32
Too bad, IE is on your system, maybe IE 4.
Go here and get the file, although I do not recommend this. Get ready for the Blue Screen of Death, illegal operations, invalid page faults, which will occur when you use this file as it is for IE6 SP1, not compatiable with 95b. We'll be hearing from you again here.
This page has more hits on wininet.dll.
It would be better to update to IE 5.5 SP2 and avoid all the above.

You can lead a horse to water...

    W95b wininet.dll problem

Thanks markp62...I understand "You can lead a horse to water... "

I'm approaching what seems the only realistic solution...IE 5.5 SP2! Against my better judgment.

The manufacturer (eMachineShop.com) says to load IE 4 (?)

Can I get by without OE?

    Thanks again,
    Larry

If you update to IE 5.5 SP2 without updating OE you will not get a critical update concerning the way scripting is controlled in emails and some webpages. If I remember right it has a lot to do with a exploit a virus such as Iloveyou.Vbs would use. Although you use Netscape for browsing and email, it is a good idea.

Thanks for all of your input!

Yesterday was a bad day. First tried the MS download installer for IE 5.5 sp2. The first part went fine. However the installation via internet never did. I kept getting a message that it was unable to download files. Help said that a slow connection or a busy site might be the problem. So I tried again, and again, later and later. Tried again at 6AM this AM with same result.

My connectoid shows 50,666 bps, not bad for a 56K V.90 modem.

So, yesterday I decided to do the full install download (86,141 KB!). My ISP dropped out at 25%. I tried again and got to 82,000 KB and my ISP dropped out again!

I obviously need a download manager that can resume! I've got an old copy of (I think it was called) GetRight I may try.

Meanwhile, since I have a wininet.dll version 4.70.1215 in my windows\system folder and I have version 4.72.3110.0 available do you happen to know what version of wininet.dll would come with IE 4.0? IE 5.5 sp2?

Or, do you think I really need the IE installation? If so, where do I get the Outlook update? Or, is it a part of sp2?

    Best,
    Larry

So, figuring I needed a Download Manager with a Resume function I found FreshDownload 6 which claims No Adware, No Spyware, and No Charge. I downloaded it. Got my free registration number and was about to go after the Full Intallation Version of IE55sp2 from eVolt.org.

However, when I double-click the Download Manager I get the same two errors I was getting with emachineshop:
    1) "A Device...is not funtinoning "

(There are no indications of device malfunction in Device Manager)

    2) "...linked to missing export wininet.dll: InternetGetConnected State "

    This happens off-line or on-line!

    Got any ideas?

    Hi LDunham

Other options to get IE 5.5 SP2.....

Can a friend download it for you?
Call your ISP, many times they can furnish you with a copy.
I've installed 3x versions of QuickBooks / Quicken (popular accounting program, call your friends), they always had IE (version#?) on the install CD. For QB to do online checking account updates via your bank, required user to link in with IE.

    Something has walked on TCP/IP!

The minor version of wininet should not matter!

    Do this.

If you can d/l anything at all now this is small, get DialUp Networking upgrade here (but do not run yet).

    http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...port/kb/articles/q285/1/89.asp&NoWebContent=1

Note all internet and dialup settings. phone numbers, username, password etc.

    Control Panel-Add/remove-Windows Setup-Communications.

Uncheck to uninstall Dialup Net working and VPN if checked.

    Reboot to complete the uninstall.

Back to same place check the Dialup Networking to reinstall it.

    Reboot once more.

It should be fixed here so if so you may want to quit here so DUN 1.4 below is optional. I would update it myself but if it works now you may elect not to do it.

Now install the DUN 1.4 update as directed above. Reboot to finish.

Reinstate all noted settings. This may require one more reboot to complete!

    Mike

PS Can you recieve email if so and you cannot D/L then send me a direct email with your email address and I will send it by attachment. Or to a friends email. The DUN 1.4 is small and will fit on a floppy.

Dennis L: Thanks I'll give your suggestions a try.

mflynn: I'm already running DUN 1.4 and winsock 2.

    10-4 to that!

Then how about a recap of the exact problems now. What don't work?

If you did not uninstall DUN and reinstall BEFORE the DUN 1.4 update Then it you could still have a problem here.

If none of the other suggestions work soon, you might consider doing it this way.

    Another suggestion below:

This requires that you have the full install of IE to reinstall.

    Go here download IERadicator http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html

    then

Get IE4Remove and IE5remove from our own Plainsdown's site
    http://www.geocities.com/plansdowne_ca/

Then from safe mode run them all (forget the version numbers). Then reboot to safe mode again and reinstall IE. For some reason when IE has ths been removed the IE install will fail from a CD so it must be on a HD!

Just last night, for a friend of a friend I fixed an ME that would not connect nor reinstall. Others had tried to fix it and could not. I did these steps and it is now working well.

The version number for 5.5 SP2, Wininet.Dll is 5.50.4807.2300. The OE is part of the IE install.

    10-4

From Mark's earlier post get this (do not get the stub on the other page) this is the full 84 meg install:

    http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/5.5_SP2

You may have to get a friend on broadband to download and burn it to a CD for you. Remember you must copy this to the HD for install if you use my IE removall steps.

No, I uninstalled DUN before updating to DUN 1.4.

    Actually, everything works!
I connect to the internet, surf, send/receive e-mail and attachments, download, etc.

My ISP does drop-out sometimes after 5 hours.

The real problem started when I installed eMachineShop software (see original post about it) and it gave me two error messages:
    1) "A Device Connected is not functioning "
    2) "emachinceshop.exe is linked to missing export WININET.DLL: InternetAutodial "

#2 is the one I'm trying to rectify. I don't even want IE as I use Netscape 4.78 and Opera 7.1, but so far it seems like the only way to correct wininet.dll!

In trying to download the HUGE Full Install IE5.5sp2 I decided I needed a Download Manager. I downloaded FreshDownload 6.0 and upon setup it gave me the same two errors as above!

There are no YELLOW EXCLAMATION marks in Device Manager.

I have tried Control Panel>Internet>Connection> and set "connect as needed ", both off and on without any effect on the problem.

I have tried running the both software apps while off-line and on-line; no help.

Either of you know where I can download wininet.dll 5.50.4807.2300 or would that just be asking for trouble without actually installing IE?

Thanks for all of your thinking about the problem!

    Ah heck!

Is that all. I thought you were dead in the water.

No problem at all with the wininet.dll.

The problem is caused by the program trying to use it.

So get rid of the of program that wants to use it.

If you have not already uninstall it (emachineshop) then search the HD for it and remove the leftovers. May have to uninstall the downloader also.

Use RegCleaner first look for these 2 programs on the first page and remove them then the "do them all ".

In the Regcleaner start up tab look for anything to do with either of these 2 programs and detete.

    RegCleaner
    <http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml>
Look in first 2 cols for programs you thought you uninstalled or removed, these are the dregs left by the uninstaller. Also tag and remove any that you are POSITIVE are not supposed to be on your computer. After removing these go to the top Tools-Registry Cleanup-Do them all. Delete all it finds.

Then search the registry for it or both and remove from there also.

Use RegSeeker to search for and remove it from the registry.

    Get it here: http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

After downloading and installing RegCleaner and RegSeeker all of the above should be done in Safe Mode including uninstallig of these programs.

Sounds ok. Now I will have Uninstalled and cleaned up my registry. But it doesn't seem to address the core problem.

I still want to use the emachineshop program and I suspect if I reinstall it I'll have the same problem!

    Ditto with FreshDownload!

How do you propose I get them reinstalled without the exact same problem returning?

    Best,
    Larry

Allright you are going to have to decide what you want.

Live with this or fix it.

If it does fix it, then if it does the same thing when reinstalled you now know how to fix it. So then you can fix it again or live with it??

There may have been some glitch in the first install. So it may install correctly this time.

So after removing both programs and getting all back to normal I would reinstall the Downloader first and make sure all is well with it.

Then try the Emachine.. again after downloading a fresh copy of the install.
