Looks like I probably need a new video card (who knew the **** thing had it's own mini-fan and that's what was making the noise for the last three months). Anyway, fan is barely turning and display is not right - it's not the monitor or the cables and logic sez that the board is probably fried - so I'd just as soon put a new card in first than spent three days fooling around with other solutions.

-Here's the question - I've got an nVidia GeForce 256 AGP Plus. It’s what I got with the Dell system new almost four years ago. If I'm going to buy new card - what should I get that is roughly the equivalent in an nVidia. This card has met all my needs.

    Thanks

Considering the specification of your current card, almost any nVidia card will fit your requirements. in particular the GeForce FX seems to be approximately the nearest what you already have, but I'm sure a trip to the store with your current specs in hand will make it just a matter of finding the "same" GPU as what you have. Try looking at www.nvidia.com at the legacy cards for your current and desktop or workstation for what you need to do to match your specs.

    Hope this helps.

    Alan -

    Thanks for your reply.

The challenge turned out to be finding a reseller who actually had legacy cards available. I was limited by needing and AGP type 1 or PCI card that would work off my 200-watt power supply.

Turned out (if you didn't mind the 45 minutes of holding time), Dell was very helpful in ID'ing an nVidia chipset card that would work and was available through them.

It is amazing what a mere 20-30 hours of troubleshooting and research will accomplish. Aghhhhhh!

Now if it only arrives before the current card dies completely.

It all comes back to my philosiphy. I don't throw a **** thing away. I'm using an ATI 7000 with 64MB of ram. But in the closet I have a couple of nVidia cards with 32 and 16 MB of ram, a couple of PCI Paradise cards.... etc etc etc.

After all, what's a couple of hundred extra boxes of undecipherable hardware and software collections?
