Hello, I am using version 4.90.3000 windows ME on a Pentium 3 and have developed a problem with cetain icons changing color then disappearing completely. The bigger ones on Desktop are not affected, but the smaller ones on my taskbar beside "start" are. It also affects the icons in my favorites list on Explorer and if I go to programs, settings, documents etc from "start" the drop down lists are affected to. When the machine is started up everything is fine then depending on the day it might be allright all day, or for just a few minutes. It starts out with the icons changing color, then they turn black, they might change to a file folder or they may not before dissapearing completley. The programs continue to function with no other problems noted. Any ideas? and thanks in advance.

    Hi butchoh

    Welcome to Windows BBS

First thing I would suspect when anything is wierd with active desctop or icons is a virus, even if your virus program is updated
often and you do do a full system scan every week or two, get an online scan too, there free, >they take ahwile,<
I use Housecall , there are others to..
Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

You could also safely delete the hidden file shelliconcache , On windows me its not nessesary to with folder options ,view, show hidden,
you can do a search to find it,,, delete it ,windows will rebuild it.

Hope thats it and not a virus
    Lonny

Thanks Lonnie, I am on a cable modem and a person cannot be too carefull when using one, my firewall works hard all the time. I just recently switched to McAfee from PC Cillin and have run full system scans with both. I also ran a scan with the most recent version of Spyder. I had suspected a virus myself but nothing shows up. I will give Housecall a try to triple check.
