This happens to me, too. I think it may be deliberate on the part of AOL since many people have disabled the MSN/Windows messenger from starting with OE and they saw an open niche.

I haven't found how to stop it yet, but I will.

You could also try going into the messenger's Edit Options > Edit Preferences and unchecking the box that makes AOL the default messenger.

You could also try this variant of the new version. It seemed to lock up during installation, but it did finish eventually.

Try this. In OE click tools>options and on the general tab uncheck Automatically log on to AOL Instant Messenger. Then, look in AIM's options for something that says make AIM my default messenging program (or something like that). I helped somebody with this a while back (don't use it myself) and it didn't work to just uncheck the line in OE options. Unchecking the one in AIM options did the trick.

Thank you, thank you, that took care of it. It was so irritating to have that start up everytime I wanted to check my email. You guys are the best.

Glad it worked for you. Those sort of things annoy the heck out of me. Who'd think that option would turn that off. I just bumbled on it by luck. Seems to me they don't want you to turn it off. Grrrr. :)
