I recently upgraded to XP and put my son on his own desktop. The problem is when we try to log off and switch users, the computer runs in ultra slow motion. Normal log ons are fine for either of us. What is the problem, and what can be done?

I wish that easy fix worked, but it didn't. When I press switch, my screen goes blank, except for the mouse, then it takes forever to switch and stays in a very, very slow mode once things do come up.

    Arie,
I presently have 512MB of 333MHz DDR PC2700 DIMM CL2.5 on this 30GB HD. I will add another of these memory modules when I finish upgrading my second drive (40GB) from Win98 to XP.
Based on the linked article, it sounds like I'd just be best off restarting rather than using the logoff then switch users.

Hmm, strange. You have enough memory, and switching with one user should not be a problem. When you switch, and have the problem, bring up the task manager, and see if there is a specific process taking up a large chunk of CPU time…

    Arie,
Thanks for the response, but I'm not sure what to look for in the Task Manager. At rest, under processes, the highest users look to be svchost/exe, explorer.exe, and McAfee anti virus. I tried to copy my Task Manager for you, but wasn't able to do that. I might as well ask about the other 2 issues I've discovered, also.
    1. How can I remove the instant messenger from the start up menu? It doesn't seem to be as simple as going to msconfig then unclicking it from the start up. If I do that, I keep getting a notice on startup that I've changed something I'm not supposed to change.
    2. I've installed XP on both my primary (40GB) and back up (30GB) drives. The back up is Fat 32 while the primary is NTFS. When I bring up something that requires an internet connection on my 30GB drive, it automatically brings up my internet connection. It doesn't do this on my 40GB drive. Is this an adjustment I can make, or do I have to manually bring up the internet on my own?
    Thanks for the help,
    Barry
P.S. Neither drive allows me to log off and switch users.

This seems to be my final software problem in making my upgrade from WIN98 to XP. I can log off then log on to the other account, but can't use the Switch User button. Does anyone know what might be causing this? At least I don't have to restart the computer to change users, but, if the button is there, it should be workable. This is XP Home Edition, if that makes a difference.

My only other problem, not a software problem, if anyone has any suggestions, is that I am researching which case fan to install. I'd like to make sure there is enough air flow to keep the CPU cool, yet not too much to create excess noise, dust in the system or unnecessary wasted electricity. I've narrowed my research to the following fans, but would be open to any other suggestions.
    Thermaltake A1214 (39db @ 53cfm)
    Panaflo FBA8A12U1A (38.2db @ 46.9cfm)
    Antec Smart Cool (34db @ 41cfm)
    Panaflo FBA8A12H1A (32db @ 39.6cfm)

Any and all help would be appreciated.
