    ntoskrnl.exe problam

I have seen other threads on the the web about this, but I have done some other things which may alter the situation, so just want to ensure that I got it right - no net access at home presently with no PC.

Win2000 professional - Got the blaster virus on my system and deleted the two offending files that run contain it - svchost and another one, I have spent twenty hours trying to get my system to run after subsequent actions, read on....

I ran the antivirus software and checked the system all was fine. I hadn't installed SP4 so I did that, then, while on a maintenance spree, decided to clean up the system removing unused progs, temporary internet files etc etc. To this point, the system was running perfectly

Finally, I did a defrag, and rebooted. I got the error message that Windows could not find ntoskrnl.exe or it was corrupt. Booted from the Win2000 disk and repair could not find an Windows installation to repair (option without ERD). Could not find my ERD. Went into the console and tried some things from there. I could not find ntoskrnl on the Win2000 disk (not saying it wasn't there, didn't know where to look) I then rewrote the boot sector with one of the commands in the console (sounded like a good idea), then rebooted. Initially, thought it was fixed as the system did not give the error and went to Windows boot screen with the progress bar at the bottom, then when it reached completion of that screen, the system restarted on its own and did this all over again, going into a repeating cycle. Went to a friends PC and decided to create a ERD. Looked at his system and he had installed no service packs. Went to update and downloaded the SP4 undate, 37MB on a very slow 56k connection - 5hrs. SP4 then installed on his and gave an error saying it encountered an error when installing. Ran WINVER on the run command and it was not installed. Could not be bothered downloading again, so just created a ERD and scooted off back home. Which is where I am at now. Any advice on how to proceed from here? I don't want to do the wrong thing and I will not be able to ask any more questions when I leave work and get home.

    Could be SP4

I received the same error about the ntoskrnl when I updated my PC with SP4. It had to do with my AV. I had to completed stop all processes in my AV then install sp4. When it was installed, I could turn the AV back on, but not the firewall that came with it, and I still can't, without getting the bsod and the ntoskrnl and continual rebooting.

    Hope this helps
