    Search on the net for
    pkzip help
and you will be able to download a help file containg the
    command line parameters.

I am out of date ...

as I do not use XP (98SE).
pkzip and pkunzip are DOS based. Can you get to DOS from XP ? Maybe look for XP compatible zippers/unzippers ?
    regards

    Hi merlin.

I use pkzip to back up all my data, about 3-5 gigs. I back up to a hard drive but it will backup to a floppy just as reliably, just not that amount of data. You can create the batch file with any text editor and save the file in dos text. You can run it anyway that is convenient. My batch file is long and goes all over my hdd to pick up data to back up.

One problem I ran into a couple of years ago is that of the long filenames. I switched to using a pkzip that does handle those long file names. You need to find and download "pk250c32.exe" and it will work just fine. It is a zipped file that will automatically unzip when you run it.

Here is an example of backing a single file to floppy and a sample of backing up a directory and all sub directories.

    Single file in c:\mydata

    c:
    cd \mydata
    pk -add a:floppy1.zip george.doc
    cd \

    or

    pk -add a:floppy1.zip c:\mydata\george.doc

Full directory and all sub directories

    c:
    cd \mydata
    pk -add a:floppy2.zip *.* -dir
    cd \

    or

    pk -add a:floppy2.zip c:\mydata *.* -dir

You can also exclude particular directories or files, etc.
You can go to dos or a dos box in any MS operating system. If you do a /? when running the program the help files will come and I do believe there is a printable help file embedded in the download. The same program will unzip all the data.

I have never found a windows based program that has the convenience of this program nor anywhere near the capability. I can click on one batch file and backup data all over the place into different zip files rather than all together in one file.

If you can't find the download, let me know.

Windows XP doesn't have DOS, it has a simulated DOS but it's somewhat limited in what it can do. You would be better off changing to WinZip which is nothing more than pkzip upgraded for use in Windows.

    HI.

I work mostly in DOS and I've been running XP for well over a year with no problems. However, with the PK250 you don't have to do anything in DOS. You create the batch file with any windows editor and just put a shortcut for the batch file anywhere. Just click and it runs automatically.

I wrote programs for DOS in assembler language for years before switching to windows and the current DOS facilities in XP works as good as the old DOS.

The problem is a windows zip program that will create multiple zip files with data that is spread all over the hdd. Any particular folder's data would be zipped into a single zip file and the next set of data somewhere else on the hdd would zip into a different file. And do all this with one click. They are all created one right after the other. That's why I use the reliable pk250 rather than one of the many windows zip programs I've tried. None of them will do this.

Happy with winrar - slick, easy, adaptable and save files smaller.
