    NO SPLASH IN 7.02

    Hi

As a matter of interest, I have the following target line in my NS 7.02 taskbar icon:

    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape7.02\Netscp.exe" -P "weltrn" -quiet -browser -nosplash

Perhaps I've done something wrong such as missed a set of quotation marks, but I see the splash screen every time I load NS. It also seems to take forever to load, too, on a Pentium III 800 MHz machine with 320 RAM.

NS is my default browser by choice but IE 5.5 loads in a flash and also has a home page loaded [not MS] 2-3 times as fast as NS. Latter has NO home page, just a blank screen.

I've given up on both the load speed [even though I Defrag this drive nightly and 98SE claims to defrag itself in a manner as to speed loading of popular programs] and no splash screen.

I'm willing to listen to any recommendations.

    Welt,

As a matter of interest, the command line switch -P is not case sensitive. -p works equally as well. the profile name is case sensitive.
I don't believe that you need the -browser as netscpe.exe starts the browser by default.
I also beleive that you do not need -nosplash as the -quiet does the same thing.

My 7.02 target line is :

"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -p jim's -quiet and starts with no splash screen.

Do you have more than one profile ?

    COMMAND LINE

    Hello captjlddavis

Don't rightly recall how I came by the line I am using but have copied and will give yours a try.

Does 7.02 open quickly for you? Perhaps my problem is where it found it's home on my C drive when installed.

    Thanks for responding.

    Welt,

Only one pofile - good - and I assume that it is called weltrn

By rights, your line should work if you drop the "-browser" & "nosplash" entries -

My path may be a little different than yours....

Just be sure that you have the correct spelling for your profile name - remember that it is case sensitive.....

    let us know.

    NO SPLASH

    Hi captjlddavis

It worked. I dropped the `browser' and `no splash' and NS not only opens without a splash screen, it opens much, much faster. That splash screen seems to have contributed signically to slow opening.

    My profile works just fine.

    Many thanks.

    STILL A PROBLEM

    captjlddavis

I spoke too soon. I can call up Netscape independently from the tray icon without the splash screen but when I click on a hot link within a Eudora message the splash screen still comes up.

Now I just have to find the command line where by Eudora calls for the default browser to open...!

    Hummmmmm.

    Welt,

I know zippo about Eudora, I have always looked at the splash screen as "eye Candy" something to watch while the program loads - To the best of my knowledge the command line switched ONLY work from a command line. If you really HATE the splash screen, you may be able to work around the display. Otherwise live with it......;)

Post back and I will see if I can think of anything.

    OH WELL

    Thanks for responding again.

I'll find a way...just have to discover how Eudora links up with the default browser.

I've been searching the INI files, Win.INI, et al but to no avail so far. You are correct, it requires a command line and I'm wondering if perhaps I can change it universally via DOS.

    Not to worry.

No worry needed, as eudora (should) uses the default browser.
    http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/ini.html

Nothing is guaranteed, so back up before doing anything.

    in win98...

    my computer/view/folder options/file types tab
    scroll down to:
    (each must be edited separately)
URL : hypertext transfer protocol (http)
URL : hypertext transfer protocol with privacy (https)
    edit
    edit
    change:
    path_to_mozilla.exe -url "%1 "
    to
    path_to_mozilla.exe -url -nosplash "%1 "

    ;)

Alternatively, you can edit the registry, searching for mozilla.exe and edit the settings for http and https (and ftp if you need it).

    Good luck.

    HYPERTEXT

    Hi tranquilo

Thanks for the instructions now copied and saved. I'll have a look at this.

Yes, Eudora does recognise NS as my default browser save for rare instances of non-conforming web sites that demand and call only IE, but they're rare.

Will let you know how I make out. Probably not get to it tonight as I'm trying to help somebody else solve another problem.

Blind leading the blind you say? Probably. :)

    DIDN'T WORK

    Hi again tranquillo,

Well my changes failed. I tried using the `-nosplash' switch [without the single quotes] and also subbing `-quiet' as I currently use with my shortcuts.

When I clicked on the link to this message in Windows BBS, a single number `1' appeared in the address line of NS which eventually took me to a Netscape URL.

One significant difference I did not address is that my Netscape executable path reads:

    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape7.02\Netscp.exe -url "%1 "

There's no Mozilla.exe file on my system anywhere - at least FIND can't locate it.

    Please, how say you now?

    Thanks.

    FURTHER INFORMATION

    Hi tranquillo

Sorry to be a pest but here're some of my Registry entries:

    Mozilla Desktop

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Desktop
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ThemeFile
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\My Documents

    Mozilla Netscape 7.02

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.02\Extensions
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.02\bin
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.02
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.02\Extensions
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.02\bin
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.02

[One of the sub keys for this 7.02 set includes the path to Netscp.exe. There is NO Mozilla.exe to be found]

What can I say? Are you perchance using the Mozilla browser and not Netscape or ????

    REGISTRY INFORMATION - REPOST

    Good morning tranquillo

I wrote an additional message to you re my Registry last night and again my post seems to have failed. I cannot find it so ere's the data again. Note the two Mozilla sectors but NO `MOZILLA.EXE' to be found.

Also note the three references in one of the Netscape sectors.

Please comment upon the final Netscape sector. I'm mystified by the reference to 4.79. Is all or part of
this sector left-over `dregs'? Should they be cast out with the stale left over coffee?

Thanks again. I don't know why my `submitted' posts don't always go. This is the second time in three days.
    *****************************

    Mozilla Netscape 7.02

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.02\Extensions
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.02\bin
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.02
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.02\Extensions
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.02\bin
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.02

    [A sub key reads: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape7.02\Netscp.exe]

    Mozilla Desktop

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Desktop
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ThemeFile
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\My Documents

Agains, there's NO Mozilla.exe reference to be found in the Registry or as I can spot.

I did, however, find a reference to Mozilla under one Netscape sector, to wit:

    Netscape Netscape

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape\7.02 (en)
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Netscape\Netscape\7.02 (en)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Netscape\Netscape
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\NETSCP.EXE\shell
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\NETSCP.EXE
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\NETSCP.EXE\shell
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\NETSCP.EXE
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\https\shell\open\command
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\NetscapeMarkup
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Netscape.TalkNav.1
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Netscape.Registry.1
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Netscape.Help.1
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Netscape.Network.1
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MozillaHTML\shell\open\command
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MozillaXML\shell\open\command
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MozillaXHTML\shell\open\command

And here's another Registry set of entries:

    Netscape Netscape 6

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape 6\7.02 (en)
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape 6
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Netscape\Netscape 6\7.02 (en)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Netscape\Netscape 6

[I've never had Netscape 6.x installed. I went directly from 4.79 to 7.02, latter installed after uninstalling 4.79 or so I thought. Note the following separate Registry group of keys]

    Netscape Netscape Navigator

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\User Trusted External Applications
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Main
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Page Setup
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Automation Shutdown
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\INTL
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Automation Viewers
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Automation Protocols
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Automation Startup
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\biff
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Default Plugin
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Viewers
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Suffixes
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Viewers.BAK
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\4.79 (en)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Users
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\MAPI
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator

Of course, there's also the uninstall sector which I've here ignored.

tranquillo, I just noticed your corrective post re netscp.exe vs mozilla.exe and which I appreciate.

I've had less than 3 hours of sleep and am bleery eyed.

Regardless, I cannot make those hypertext revisions work
Should perhaps the `-nosplash' or `-quiet' switch be place after the "%1 "? Guess I'll have to play with the entries.

OH MY.!!! I've double posted re the keys. Now I know, the missing post was hidden on the continuation on Page 2 I'll bet. Told you I am asleep. Sorry about this.

I tried to wade through all the previous messages, and I got lost. I will try to put down what I find with any post-4.x Netscapes. If you right click on the shortcut|properties you should see, in the Target line something like this:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\netscp.exe To open without a splash screen you add to the line <space>-quiet
<space> means keyboard space, so the new path will be
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\netscp.exe -quiet
Although I do the above with all my Netscape and Mozilla shortcuts, it does not matter where you put the command. If you want to include a path to the profile first, it should work.

I don't think that the no splash makes any difference. Netscape is loading all your preferences, including your bookmarks file, which would slow down anyone, if large.
My suggestion is not to look at the screen, and if the initial 10-30 sec are important, use Quick Launch. Then, all your setting will be preloaded. But, more memory(RAM) will be used.
