When attempting to share a Folder/Drive on my XP computer, I get a message that says by default, Remote Access has been Disabled by XP.

I've run the Network Wizard, but that has totally ******* up even connecting to the Internet on the XP.

How can I enable this Remote Access feature so that the Network Sharing and Security area is not greyed out.

I'm able to connect from my XP computer to my Windows ME compputer, but not vice-versa.

    Thanks.

"Remote Access" usually speaks of connections other than a LAN.

How are the two PCs connected?

Are you logging on to the XP system with an Administrator account?

    XP Pro or XP Home?

    Thanks for getting back.

Yes, I know that Remote Access is usually referring to one PC taking over the other.... Confusing to me also..... Did it months ago, but can't remember how I enabled it.

It's XP Pro and I'm logged in as the Administrator (only user on the machine). The message states that Remote Access needs to be enabled so that I can MAP the path to the other computer on the LAN.

The computers are hooked up thru a simple Switch acting as a Hub.

    Thanks.

It sounds like the PCs aren't talking properly on the LAN so the networking wizard thinks you want a dial-up connection.

BTW - you said " ... Switch acting as a Hub." Just for clarification, a switch and a hub are different devices for doing the same thing - passing traffic along on your LAN.

Things to check for: assuming you are using standard NICs with RJ-45 connections (the things that look like an overgrown telephone plug)

    1. Cables - you should be using regular cables rather than "cross-over" cables. Easiest way to check is to compare the ends. Wire colors should be the same at both ends for each pin position.

    2. Ports - some hubs and switches have a port that can be switched from regular to cross-over with a button or something. It should be regular if connecting to a PC and cross-over if you are daisy chaining another hub/switch to the port. This is done to allow use of only regular cables without needing to put a cross-over cable in the system.

    3. Do you get a link light on the NIC? If not, see items #1 & 2 again. If 1&2 are OK, try setting the NICs and the switch ports to the same speed. Auto will sometimes give some problems and prevent connections or else make the really, really slow.

If you really do have a switch, 100mbs and full duplex should be fine unless the NICs are older and will only do 10mbs. If you have a hub, it probably won't run 100mbs full duplex so set everything to 10mbs and half-duplex.

    4. Are all the PCs members of the same workgroup? They should be.

    5. Is some protocol loaded on all the PCs? For the sake of troubleshooting and getting an initial connection, doesn't much matter which protol but they all need to have at least one in common.

If all these are fine, the networking wizard should be able to set you up.

    Back over to you tglow.

    Hi.

    Thanks.

I'm able to communicate from the XP machine to the WindowsME machine.... Since the Remote Access isn't enabled, the ME machine has no way of communicating with the XP machine, because I can't "share" the drive/folder on the XP machine.

    Thanks.

    Todd.

    Thank you.

However, neither article explains why my Sharing capabilities has been "greyed" out upon installation.

I'm still looking for a way to manually "enable" remote access, so I'm able to activate my Folder/File sharing.

    Thanks.
