Lost C: space!

I have a 20Mb Hard Drive and recently tried to install Windows 98SE and there was a power cut!

Now when I format it says "Formatting 8,056M" and when I try to then install Windows 98 again it says I dont have enought space!

I have used Wipeout, KillDisk and FDisk and I'm stumpt!

Any ideas how to reclaim my Harddrive space?

Hi Gary- I think this problem has to do with your Int13 Extensions not being enabled. Without this, there is a 8.4GB limit, which seems to fit. Look in your setup program for this setting and make sure it is enabled. It may take some digging to find it. Best of luck, Clydeo22

Sorry about that. INT13 Extensions are a BIOS extension that allow you to use a hard drive up to 137GB. Logical Block Addressing (LBA) broke the old DOS barrier of 504MB hard drives and permits drives up to 8.4GB. This has to do with the logical geometry of the hard drive having to stay within certain limits. LBA and the INT13 Extensions in effect, lie to the system BIOS and circumvent the limit. Most hard drives will be fine if the settings are Auto and LBA in the CMOS setup. Check that first. If you have an old board, you may have to update the BIOS or I believe you can get a drive overlay program from your hard drive manufacturer. Check the setup settings first. I hope this makes sense. My PC is actually a Laptop, it is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 440CDT (quite old)

What do I need to do?

Hi Gary- Way to hang in there! When you start your computer, do you see a screen that tells you how to enter setup? Usually it is something like pres F1, Del, F10 or some other key combination depending on your manufacturer. If you can find that, go into setup and just check to see what the IDE (Hard drive) settings are and write back. If we can get that info, I think that with all the great people on this board, we can figure something out. I will do some checking on your make and model# and see what I can dig up. Also, on the first screen you see upon startup, find your BIOS make and version number. It should be at the very top. Back in a bit, Clydeo22.

What did you do when you were using FDISK? Give me a little information. What did you use it for? What did it tell you?

I've done some work on a CDT4030 and I don't think there is much difference with your machine other than the cpu - The original HDD in a 4030 was something like 6 gigs.

 

Ok, I have BIOS Version 6.B0 (I flashed only a month ago before putting in the new HDD)

There are some options in the BIOS that might interest you:

Fisrt,

--------Hard Disk------------------------------
| Hard Disk Mode = Enhanced IDE(Normal) |

The other option for this is "Standard IDE "

Next,

--------PCI Bus------
| PCI Bus = IRQ11 |
---------------------

There are no options for this (not that I can see anyway as I can even highlight it!

Lastly,

--------Drivers I/O---------------------------------
| Built-in HDD = Primary IDE(1F0H/IRQ14)
| Selectable Bay = Secondary IDE(170H/IRQ15) |
-----------------------------------------------------

The only option for "Built-in HDD" is "Not used" but there are many options for "Selectible Bay "

They are all the things in the BIOS I think will interest you.

But here is something very interesting aswell "Resource confict found. Are you sure ? (Y/N)" message appears as I leave the BIOS even though I have pressed the "Home" Key to set default values!
