On Aug 26, I upgraded my Logitech mouseware to 9.78. After reboot I noticed the acceleration did not work in an application (StreetSmart Pro) that I use daily. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled 9.73 which I had been using. On reboot the mouse cursor locked up and I could not use it. On to safe mode same problem. So I restored to Aug 25 where everything as working great. On reboot the keyboard became locked along with the mouse. So on to safe mode again. Same thing. I don’t know what to do from here. Please help.

OH, I am using my wife's pc for now.

You do not specify whether USB, PS2 or standard Keyboard and/or Mouse is being used.

Just from reading you post I suspect that you may be using USB.

If this be the case I would suggest you get the keyboard back to a standard key board. And if possible get the Mouse onto PS2.

Both are much more reliable then.

Mouse and Keyboard are both PS2.

If you can, put the keybaord on the standard keyboard plug.

HMMMMM!! If I am thinking correctly and looking at my machine correctly you do not have a standard keyboard plug.

I have a feeling you are running into a SHARED file problem.

Do you have any drivers loading for the keyboard ? Or is it just plugged in ?

Keyboard and mouse drivers can interfere with each other. That is why I myself do not install any special keyboard drivers. They are nice but can ( and did ) cause problems.

did a restore to Aug 25

Was that a Restore point that XP made ? Or was it one you made ?

There are times that the RP that XP makes on its own are not reliable.

And regardsless of who may say otherwise I have found the to be true.

Thank goodness that I was only testing when I used a RP that XP had made before installing new software. It was nothing but problems. I used the one that I had made within a few minutes before and it was fine.

It was one that XP made. But now I can't get to that point to select one that I made any more. I want to thank you for taking the time to think about this for me! Is there a way to upgrade XP Home to Pro? Just a thought. With Windows before XP and NTFS you could upgrade to the next version of Windows. If I can then I won't lose the data that I don't have backed up. I don't want to lose some email's and favorites that I saved, everything else I have backed up. The Favorites I can get back in time but not the email's.

This is not sounding good. We need some help here. I have exhausted my idea supply.

Upgrading XP home to XP Pro I have no ideas at all about. I went with Pro to begin with.

Even a repair install of XP would be a new thing for me.

But I am awfully surprised that someone else has not kumped in here.

I don't think it has anything to do with hardware. I am pretty sure that it is the drivers or something else in XP. This is a new PC only 3 months old. I have had no problems until I installed Logitech Mouseware 9.78. So the CMOS has not changed for at least 3 Months.

BB - no body jumped in since you wuz on a roll.

OLDSALTY - I'd start fresh with the logitech thing. Go to the device manager and remove any mouse entries you find. Then reboot and the system should reload the mouse drivers. After that you can try the new Logitech stuff if you want.

Perhaps a coincedence, but right before my freeze problem, I dumped my Belkin trackball for a Logitech one. Uninstall it (safe mode if you have to) and try to reboot without the Logitech software. The comp should recognize it as a mouse (input device). Or swap it with one (like your wife's) that you are SURE works. But the fact that your keyboard is freezing, too, tells me it's more than just a mouse driver problem.

Post back and let us know how you make out.

I am making a NTFS boot disk so I can copy the files to floppy. I can't boot the hard drive and use the mouse or keyboard. But from cd or floppy everything is ok. So it is XP!

May be a wild idea but try unplugging the Mouse and see if the keyboard works.

If it does try to work your way through the device manager and REMOVE any and all mice ( pointing devices )

Then power the machine down and replug the mouse.

That raises a question which may or may not fit.

But any chance did you plug either the keybaord or mouse in with the machine powered up ? That can create problems with PS2.

I do not think it is XP.

I think it is actually some driver conflicts. And/or shared files.

No Go on the unplug of the mouse. I never touched the hardware except to use the keyboard and mouse turn it on and and off and floppies and Cd's. When I say XP I meant the OS. I include any drivers in the OS or nothing works. I also think it may be a driver conflict but I have to access the OS first to fix it. Thanks again for the ideas.

Well I fixed it. As the files were too valuable to lose I went out and got another drive. Installed it as C and made the other D. Then I reloaded my setup which I have ghosted (2 hours). better than the last three days. Thanks to all who tried to help. I don't recommend this to everyone but I think I got a good deal. Maxtor 7200 rpm, ATA-133, 120 gig = $109 from CostCo which is around the corner from where I live.

    Thanks again

Gald to read that things are looking better

But, please tell me that you did not leave the 120gig all in one partition.

Divide it into at least 4 partitions and keep those valuable files on other than C: That way if the OS does go bad you will not need to be so worried about losing them.

I have a small network in the house. it is a 4 port router with three PC on it. One in the cellar and the other two in the office all shared. The one in the cellar has a 60gig, my wifes has an 80gig, and now mine has a 100gig drive D and a 120gig drive C. You are correct about storing critical files on separate drives. I had been doing that with everything accept OE data files (saved email and address book) and IE favorites. Form now on they all will be backed up on a separate drive.
