How does one remove some startup categories? Not just removing the check marks, but the item completely. I have some that I will never use and some duplicates.
    Thank you.

Open regedit, and navigate to HKLM/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run- (notice the - after the word run).
Delete everything there, and they will no longer be in the msconfig list.

opheim1--reboot's advice is correct, but you should first uncheck the item in msconfig. Otherwise it will be in Run not Run- .

ladyLuck, maybe you should try a Program like
"StartUpCop" it works very well without the Dangers of RegEdit. All of your Items running at start-up are listed and you can eighter Disable or Delete it is always good to disable first if you are not sure what it is or what it does what you are about to delete this way you can see if it affects your running in any way.
    good luck
