At my startup, I get a notice on the task bar that reads: Devices or Applications disabled. "CD Recording Software" will cause windows to become unstable. Windows has prevented these drivers from loading. Click here for more details.
I have a HP cd-writer (9300 series), for which I have installed a new Windows XP compatible driver. How do I get a driver to install that Win.XP will accept?
Thanks in advance for all your help.

If the writer worked before, try rolling the drivers back to the ones that worked.

To do that, go to Control Panel>System>Hardware tab>Device Manager button, find the entry for the CD writer under DVD/CD-ROM drives, double click on it. Then go to the Driver tab and click on the "Roll Back Driver" button.

If you got those drivers from the Microsoft update site be forewarned - driver updates from Microsoft often create more trouble than they fix. I don't know what they do to them but because of whatever it is they do, I never get driver updates from Microsoft.

If the burner isn't working correctly, the correct drivers can be found on the HP site on this page.

    driver not loading

Thanks Miz, but I started from scratch and installed Windows XP as my new operating system. Therefore there is no driver to roll back to. The "supposably" Windows compatible driver that I tried to install, came from HP.

    Hi Denise

Was the installed driver a "signed" driver? If NO go here...
My computer, right click, choose "properties" takes you to "System Properties" view. Choose "Hardware Tab ". In the middle of this view see "Driver Signing" button, click on it. See the 3 + 1 questions per how XP accepts unsigned drivers. Choose the one you feel comfortable with. Make sure there is a check mark also in " "Make this system default" if you want XP to keep this setting.
I use "Ignore....." , you may prefer "Warn... "
You have to make the decsion. BUT if you are trying to use a "unsigned driver" and you use "Block...." option, you can NOT installed unsigned drivers.

    Prevented drivers from loading

sorry for the delay in getting back to these posts. I appreciate the help nevertheless.

I have checked the box that says "ignore" for the unsigned driver
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the device and driver.
I still get that message, but now it pops up 3 times!
It appears that the CD writer is working fine and I can live with the message pop-up but would rather not if I don't have to.

    Hi Denise,

Recently I upgraded a friend's m/c to XP with a clean install to a new HD and installed his old HP CD-Writer Plus 9100 series without a problem using the XP compatible software downloaded from HP.

The driver is installed by Win XP - AFIK the HP software contains no drivers for the CD-RW drive - it is just writing software.

So which driver did you install??

In Device Manager you should find that the drivers for your CD-RW drive and your DVD or CD-ROM drive are the same, assuming you have 2 drives - both MS.
The key here is "CD Recording Software" What does '...more details' say?

Did you upgrade to XP or make a clean install?

If the install was clean - to a freshly formatted HD, and you downloaded and installed the HP writing software for XP then the problem is puzzling.

If you upgraded the old writing software will still be on the HD and may well be not compatible with XP - the 9100 series Win 98 software would not even load.

    My suggestion -

Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove all HP burning software.
Reboot and just check that the drive will read a data CD - it should.
Install the XP version of the HP burning software from the link Miz posted and check it out.

Opinions differ here, but IMO disable XP's native CD burning software - My Computer > right click on CD-RW drive > Properties > Recordind and uncheck ' Enable CD recording on this drive'

If you decide to do this and still get the message post back - there is more that can be done :)

    driver not loading

I shall try your suggestion, in the meantime to answer your questions:

The key here is "CD Recording Software" What does '...more details' say?
The details say - The driver installed may have been Easy CD Creator, Windows Media Player or Real Jukebox. I have downloaded all the newest WinXP compatibles for every one hoping to get rid of that pesky message.

Did you upgrade to XP or make a clean install?
I made a clean install, but if memory serves me correctly, I may have used the older version installation disk for the HP cd-writer.

    Wish me luck!

    Surely wish you luck :)

If you have both Easy CD Creator and HP burning software loaded there may well be a conflict between the two which is causing the message.

As I recall EasyCD Creator will not co-exist with some burning software.

    Do you have both loaded?

If you have Real Jukebox loaded I would remove that - temporarily at least - RealPlayer is known to cause some odd problems.

Hold fire on Real Jukebox - I can't find the thread in which RealPlayer caused a problem

This is where I'm at now...
When I click on Driver File Details for my HP cd-writer and
my original CD-rom drive, I get six driver files. Four of them are provided by Microsoft and are digitally signed by MS WIN-XP Publisher. The other two are the ones not started because of instability. They are Adaptec and VERITAS Software.
The message does not appear when I disable both of the drives.
I have uninstalled the HP software (called HP CDnow) and RealJukebox. I did not uninstall Windows Media Player, should I?
Shall I uninstall both CD drives and start new?

I'm not overly familiar with HP burning software as I have Asus CD-RW and Nero.

    However :

Leave Windows Media Player alone - that should not be a problem

Veritas is the back up software

Adaptec is ?? - probably the CD-RW writing software.

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove Veritas and Adaptec - if they show there.

Go to Device Manager and uninstall the CD and CD-RW drives and reboot (cold - shut down and reboot - NOT restart)

Then install the HP software from the link Miz gave - the first 2 listed anyway - the third if you want the backup.

Then?? post back if all hunky dory :)

If not still some further possibilities!

 I've uninstalled both cd drives, I could not find Adaptec or Veritas in the Add/Remove Programs, shut down and started up again. The pop-up message appeared numerous times now. New hardware was detected and it seems that those original drivers were automatically installed.
I uninstalled both drives again, downloaded the new HP software, installed that and rebooted.
Now I have 8 (count them...8) drivers for both drives.
    That pesky message still persists.

These kind of problems just drive me up a tree, I know how frustrating it must be for you.

Had Adaptec installed on this XP Home machine, did an upgrade install XP over itself. The only software the install program flagged as incompatible was Adaptec. Had version 5.

Anyhow, I suspect you may have some remenants of Adaptec lurking in your machine, even though it does not appear in "Add Remove Programs" If you have uninstalled it, you need to get rid of anything that has been left.

Check your "C" drive, program files (or wherever you may have installed it.) and see if there is an Adaptec folder in there. If so, open it and see what is inside. Post back and maybe we can help you get rid of the rest.

If "Easy CD Creator" is in there, click the .exe Icon and see if the program runs. It may very well still be there, just not on the uninstall list.

I use Norton System Works to get rid of stuff like that.

Check in add>remove programs for Adaptec direct cd. If it's there, unistall it. Using the drive as a cdrom should not require any special driver. Likewise, I don't believe using Easy CD Creator should require any special driver. It's all handled by the software. The only driver I'm aware of that would cause this sort of thing would be the one that Direct CD requires. I "ve been wrong before though. :)

    Hi Denise: Its me again.

Just looking around in program files I found a Roxio folder. In it was Easy CD Creator, I thought I had uninstalled it. No, I know I had uninstalled it, but there it was.

apparently was in an Adaptec folder as well as a Roxio folder. Go figure.

    So, search for Roxio too.

    Hi Denise,

Been thinking about this today - and, unless you've solved the problem by now, it may be time for some drastic action :)

    1. Check for anything Roxio in Add/Remove programs as martinr121 mentioned (Roxio took over Adaptec burning software) and remove it if present. Also anything relating to Direct CD and Easy CD - which I think you have done.

    2. Uninstall the HP burning software.

    3. Uninstall both drives in Device Manager

    4. Shut down the PC

    5. Open the case and pull the power cables from the 2 drives

    6. Reboot and go to this thread
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18359
Follow Mike's instructions for 'Clean up good!' - you can skip the spyware section - Spybot and Adaware. This should rid the Registry of all traces of the programs uninstalled.

7.Shut down the PC, re-connect the power cables to the drives and reboot. Any messages??

    8. Reload the HP software.

    drivers not loading, continued

Well, I found two Roxio folders in my search and deleted them. Nothing on Adaptec or Easy CD Creator.
I'll see where this gets me.

Thanks again for all your tips.

    Some progress :)

If you do nothing else suggest you run the registry cleaners to clear out all traces of Roxio, Adaptec, etc

I don't know if I'm up to disconnecting the drives from the power cables (not with all ready having dealt installing a new power supply and then with that blast.worm virus).
The message is annoying but not crucial, it just pops up twice now. Probably once for each cd drive. When I have more time and more confidence that everything else is running okay, then maybe I'll use those drastic measures :)

Thank you all, for your time and help!

    Fair comment :)

Still suggest you run the registry cleaners, though.
