I am trying to use my Windows XP backup tool for a System State backup to a CD-RW in my E drive(my burner) Every time I try to do this I can't get by where I browse to where I want the files stored.

I am told to make sure it's a valid path???

Is my CD burner not being recognized as valid device.?

I am simply trying to backup to a CDRW in my E drive.

Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?

Correct the backup program is not recognizing the CDR.

I don't use this program but I always create my Drive Image on any other drive and the burn it to cd.

As I recall you can use Backup to a CD-RW drive if you have InCd or similar packet writing software installed. The CD-RW is then seen as a disk on the system.

However I had problems using this method - admittedly before Ahead came out with a version of InCd that worked properly with XP.

Mike's suggestion is the best - but does it work on a single drive?

Not quite sure, but are you saying I need to format it with InCd or DirectCD before trying to download to it?

What is Drive Image; is that something different that backing up.
I managed to save it to my C-drive and then burn to a cd-rW but that was a lot more tedious.

I thought the XP program was supposed to be able to format disc as well.

You need to format the CD-RW before it can be mounted and recognised as a drive.

Powerquest Drive Image - I've not used it - will make an image of a drive.

Norton Ghost will backup/restore to/from a ghost image of the drive and will write to another partition or CD/CD-RW - it will not put the backup on the same partition as the source. Individual files can be extracted from the ghost image.
You can also clone a disk or partition to another disk or partition.

AFIK neither program will make incremental or differential backups - only full copies/ghosts/clones.
