    Gals and Guys,

I am lost with this random dial-up and boot-up 'rnaapp'. I have lived with knocking it out so I could shut down, even reboot.

For months and months, I read and acted on many of the RNAAPP postings. I followed every advice possible. I have gotten a headache from every attempt--all being failures to rid of 'rnaapp'.

Norton Professional 2003 is the culprit. Live Update was turned off long ago. MS's patch is a failure. So was creating a desktop shortcut to log on ('The Taming of RNAAP').

I have no running subscriptions unless it's hidden Norton causing it. I hate to take my modem out and re-install its software.

I have messed around everywhere in 'connections'.

One item I would like to try. Read it was a remedy. Running the search for 'autodial' in the registry I get two listed. I would like to change the 1 to a 0
    eg. "01 00 00 00" to "00 00 00 00" somewhere there.
Where do I find this string of numbers?

Do you feel this would help? Worth a try?
Any other questions or suggestions is highly appreciated.

    Love you People,
    steve

    But have you done this????

This "IS" dialup networking and should be there but it should not lock up the computer or not allow it to shut down.

Something is wrong with Dial Up Networking. You should remove it and reinstall it clean.

    So do this.

First download DUN 1.4 (there is a ver for 98 and another for 98SE).

    Get it here: http://computing.vt.edu/software_and_hardware/windows/osupdates.html

    But do not install.

Now write down all internet settings in dialup networking.

    Reboot to safe mode.

    Start-settings-control panel-add/remove-windows setup-communications. Remove dialup networking.

Then reboot to normal, then go back to same place and add DUN back. Reboot to finish the install. Then install the DUN 1.4 update and reboot to allow this to finish installing.

Now create a new connection and use the settings you wrote down.

    IS WIN98-SE CD NEEDED

    MIKE,

FOR THE ABOVE PROCEDURE, DO I NEED THE WINDOWS 98-SE DISK?

QUITE AWHILE BACK, I RECEIVED A NEW MODEM UNDER WARRANTY. AT THAT TIME, I RECEIVED THE FREE UPGRADE FROM 1ST WINDOWS 98 TO WIN98-SE AFTER HARD DRIVE FORMAT. DO NOT HAVE A WIN98-SE CD. ONLY HAVE THE OLD FIRST VERSION OF WINDOWS 98.

    THANKS
    STEVE

    Mike,

When finally visiting the computer repair shop, the tech told me he cannot burn me a CD copy of the Win98 SE he installed. He mentioned one copy was installed in my new harddrive to use. I did find this copy, but do not know what 'cab' or how to use this.

It it possible to re-install 'the dial-up networking' as you suggested using these 'cabs'?

I still have the 1st Win98 CD given by Microsoft after using their beta version as a trial user.

Could I use this old CD to re-install 'dial-up networking', or would it show a conflict-problem?

    Sincerely,
    Steve

NO NO NO. 98SE Dial up networking is much different than the original.

    Hey Mike

You are quite right. It should not but it can and does. I fought with it all the time I had a Dialup account. I used to just pull a CAD deal and end task on it. Or wait about 5 minutes for it to shut itself down.

I removed and re-install DUN with NO SUCCESS.

Another thing that will cause a shutdown hangup is Norton Anti-Virus set to check the A: ( with no floppy in it ) dirve at shut down. That can and hangup the shutdown also.

    BillyBob,

Heard this mentioned here before--to see if Norton is set to check Floppy A.

I have Northon Profeesional 2003, and could not find any such setting to uncheck.

Sorry but I can no longer help with that as I no longer use NAV.

But the setting was in there somewhere and near the bottom of one of the various settings windows.

    In NortonSystemWorks 2002 -
    Open System Works
    Click Options from Menu
    Click Norton Anti Virus
    Click Auto-Protect
    Click Advanced
There is a box to check for Scan floppy disk in A: for boot viruses when shutting down

If there are over 90 files in the folder containing the cab files, those are probably your windows setup files. When windows asks for the setup CD, just browse to that folder. I would make a guess that the folder is either C:\Win98 or C:\Windows\Options\Cabs.

    thanks for suggestions

I found I had unchecked those 'to scan for virus floppy boxes' in Norton Professional 2003 long ago from reading posts here to do it.

Would like to try the "˜dun14-SE’ patch downloaded as I am sure this was never done.

There are too many 'setups' and cab folders and I cannot understand the last procedure to get the entire 'Dial-up Networking' reinstalled. Will just wait until I can borrow a Win98SE CD to use for this.

    Thanks everyone
    steve
