    Hi all!

Windows Update notified me of two critical updates, one of which was an update of the NVIDIA drivers.

Is this update really considered critical or is it a MiStake?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

If you had an Nvidia mainboard I would have said it's possible given the problems Nvidia has had with producing good drivers for its Nforce2 boards. :D But I can see you don't have such a board.

No, video drivers should not be considered a critical update. You, yourself, should make the decision as to what version of the Nvidia video drivers you wish to use.

A while ago there was a NVIDIA driver update at Windows Update but it was listed under Drivers.
There was a discussion on this board whether it was wise to update or not, I chose to stick with the drivers installed by the WinXP install CD because they work well.

Now a more recent update of said driver appears under Critical Updates and I wondered, why critical?
However, I still run the "original" driver.

    Thanks,
    Christer

 I installed the MS NVidia update and my system would not boot. It ******* the settings for my LCD, and there was no way I could boot normally. I simply restored and reinstalled the original drivers.

Well, right now I´m very ...... :D ...... to have adhered to the recommendation to not update the drivers from the MS site.

If I should decide to update in the future, I´ll go to the NVIDIA site no matter what MS feels about unsigned drivers. I have never had any problems with the original NVIDIA drivers and when I was on WinME I updated as soon as a new driver was available.

However, for now I´m ...... ...... since I have no problem to fix!

I updated the NVIDIA driver listed on the MS site and it cured an ill with my Gateway XP Home system.

MS update site suggested a driver update for my system also. I've always downloaded from nVidia site. Went to there site and found they just released a update on August 13. This is a Detonator series (which I've always use) version 45.23 and it is WHQL certified. Downloaded, installed, works fine. Checked in device manager and it does state it is a MS signed driver. This is the 4th driver I've installed for this card... I believe this is the first one that has been signed.

    UPDATE______________________________________

I stand corrected... Checked out nVidia's archive. The last 4 drivers they released for my card in chronological order... the last two certified, one not signed, one pending.

Today I did some tweaks of the Services according to BlackVipers guide.

    See: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

After having set to disable, the NVIDIA update was no longer critical but a regular driver update.
