okay, i really f---ed up my regedit. my ie was opening to **** pages even though i changed the settings to blank homepage. so i went into regedit, and found the urls and deleted them.

afterwards, explorer wouldn't open urls unless i manually typed http:// so i thought i would go in and add that to the registry in: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix

now, everything (all extensions, even folders) are being opened in my default browser, netscape. i can't open any programs including regedit.

    somebody HELP!!!!

Even start~run~regedt32 opens in a browser? Or refuses to open?

Do you have a "restore point" from before you did the nasty?

If no luck with either of those, you can edit the registry from another PC networked to yours. If it's stand-alone you might be well served to borrow another 2K machine and network them long enough to unscrew your system. But do use regedt32 rather than regedit. Smarter app in 2000.

Great idea to always make a backup of the reg before you start messing around. ERD is quick to make and cheap insurance.

hawkeye81 is correct. The entry for \URL\DefaultPrefix\ are under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ URL

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ URL \ DefaultPrefix only contains a REG-SZ named (Default) with the value http://

    Then there is

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ URL \ Prefixes

    containing:

    (Default) - (value not set)
    ftp - ftp://
    gopher - gopher://
    home - http://
    mosaic - http://
    www - http://

    All REG_SZ (String value) entries..
