Trying to go wireless but keep losing connection! and more!

Hi everyone!!

It's been awhile since I've been around but everything has been just peachy with the computers............until now... I just moved and now hope with me TRYING to go wireless on the laptop it won't mess up my networking that took FOREVER to figure out! LOL!! Anyway, here goes........

I just moved so I have my regular ol PC (non-wireless) and a laptop that I wanted WIRELESS. I got it all set up and everything but sometimes it won't work, for no reason. I have to unplug the router (LinkSys) and plug it back in to make it work again, I've also tried the reset button on the router too. BOTH computers lose connection.

(of course it's stayed connected this morning.....so far!!)

It's a XP system on both and maybe I just need to configure something but I don't know what.... It's cable modem.

I'm sure I explained this funny but I just keep losing connection with the wireless mostly and also then the PC, it's driving me nuts!

I had the exact same problem. I have a LinkSys router and 2 wireless cards. I updated the firmware for the router and the drivers for the cards and the problem went away. Since the update, they have never lost the connection.

I just finished doing that now, hopefully that will work..... should I do it on the non-wireless PC too, since that is going through the router? We'll see, I've had to unplug the darned thing 3 times in the last 20 minutes!!

If you know, please tell me if I need to do the PC too!

You should update the NIC drivers for all machines on our network as well as for the router itself.

 

Just wanted to followup and tell you that I did all of the above and don't have any problems anymore, besides losing connection here and there for a second when in the other room...

How do you update the firmware for the router? Where is it found on the computer? How do you know which computer it's on. Sorry for such a newbie question.

 

The router firmware is in the router. You need to download any updates to a PC and then connect to your router with an account that has admin rights on the router. There should be an option to update firmware somewhere in the router menu.

Speaking of firmware updates, anyone running a Linksys BEFSR41 should be using firmware version 1.45.6 released in June of 2003. And from their FAQ page is a quick how-to for upgrading their firmware. Most of the router/switch devices will have a similar procedure and should have a how-to on the same site as the updates.

 

Thanks, Newt. I updated my router firmware. Now I have another question. I downloaded a driver for my pci card.
It's a 3 com. It downloaded two separate "disks" for my card.
I have unzipped them in two separate folders. When I try to update the driver, it fails to find them. I have chosen every file possible in the folder but it still won't find the driver. It keeps finding my old file even though I choose the new folder(s).
I tried installing it but it tells me to install my nic card and then install. My card is installed. It's a 3com900B-tpo card and I'm using win2000. I found what seemed to be the only choice for a driver on the site. But there is something I don't know.
The router works much faster now that I upgraded the firmware.

Solved the problem about the card. Apparently, Win2000 has a more recent driver than the one on the 3Com web site. So it wouldn't load the driver ... but how was I to know that. It took a call to 3M.
