Just today I reformated my computer. Installed Windows 2000 on one partition and I have another partition which I didnt format because it's mainly for storage.

So I've started installing all the old programs and things I need after the format and I've been having some weird problems.

    A) I opened up Internet Explorer so I could surf to a couple sites. (Download a firewall, MSN Messenger, go to Microsofts Updates page) and I've had several problems in IE.

If I right click a link and choose "Open in new window" nothing happens. Nothing at all.

Pressing Ctrl+F doesnt bring up the "Find..." window, and clicking on it under the Edit menu doesnt either.

I went to www.nvidia.com to download the drivers for my video card, but the selection boxes that I know should have options in them are empty.

I tried to go to windows update but all I get is a blank white page and it says "Done" at the bottom. I've tried going through Microsofts site and through the link in the start menu both.

When I finally got MSN downloaded I had 1 email message. Only when I click on the link nothing comes up. Also if I go to hotmail's website and log in, it starts logging in and then just stops at a white screen.

Sometimes when I click on links they dont work. This has happened with the above link to Nvidia's site, and also with the download for Sygate's firewall.

    B) When I downloaded my firewall that I use (Sygate Personal Firewall) I start the installer and it says something like "The RPC server is unavailable" I dont know what that means.

Windows 2000 came with IE5, and I had all the problems with it, and I upgrated to IE6 and still the same problems. I've never had anything like this happen before. I've done virus scans using both HouseCall by Trend Microsystems and a small popular trojan/virus specific scanner and they both turned up nothing. If anyone can help in anyway I'd be very greatful.

Sounds to me like you have a networking problem. Have a look here http://tinyurl.com/kf5x
to see if that will help. If that doesn't work, your best bet is probably just to try repairing your installation using the installation setup on the cd.

At this point and with all the problems, I'd suggest another format/install. Then load SP3 or SP4. Then make sure everything is working properly and begin to load your other apps. Check performance after each one.
