i'm currently running 2 computers in my house on a network, one xp home, and one 2000 pro. im using a linksys befsr41 router, and both computers have the linksys lne100tx nic installed in them. i have cable internet and thats hooked up to my router, which in turn is hooked up to my computers. my problem is that although the network is fine (file tranfers, computers seeing each other, etc.), the internet is EXTREMELY slow on the win2k machine (max 4.5kilobytes a second speeds online), and is fine on the xp home machine (max 250 kilobytes a second speeds online).

it was fine before on my win2k machine, and then i noticed an internet speed slowdown after i installed sp4...was wondering if there was any conflict between the sp4 and my nic? i've virus scanned both for mblast (using norton antivirus 2003) and both come up negative. i am able to ping the router fine from the command prompt in the win2k machine (i get packet return times of less than 10ms), but calling up the ip of the router through either ie or opera takes forever. i've tried releasing and renewing the ips numerous times, the cabling to the router is fine, and the ports on the router are fine. i've even gone to the trouble of checking all the drops in my house to make sure that it wasn't my wiring that was faulty. speedtests from dslreports.com from the linkline.com server return speeds of 1700kbps and above for my xp machine in every drop in my house, and doesn't even connect on my win2k machine (i left it on for 3 hours and it still didn't get to load up the webpage...)

i'm really confused at this point, as all i try to do seems to not yield any results...help anyone?

Hi conee and welcome. Gotta be frustrating for you.

Please do the following and report back on your results.

In the settings for your NIC, it is probably on the default speed setting of Auto. Change that to 100Mbps Full Duplex. They may be combined or you may have to set speed and then set duplexing. I'd do this on both PCs too. Likely won't solve your problem but should help.

In services, you probably have browsing service turned on and set to auto-start. Stop it and change the start-up to disabled.

Put 64.246.42.33 in your browser address window and press GO. It should bring up an all-white page with Test Page for MyCompaqServer.com near the top. Need to know if it does and if so, how quickly.

Try connecting from your 2K PC to the XP PC and copying a file back to the 2K PC. Should be really fast. If you need specific how-to for this, post back.

On both PCs, do the following and post the contents of the resulting text file. Make sure you specify which PC provided which data.

    start~run~cmd
ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt (note the space before and after the >)

    1) changed speed of nic to 100 full duplex. no effect

    2) terminated computer browser service and set disabled (i think this is what you meant by the browser service, since there was no other service with the word browser it in). no effect

    3) connecting to 64.246.42.33, does not bring up page in either IE or Opera (takes hours with no progress, but the browser is clearly trying to connect to the page), but pinging the ip gives me return times of 60ms

    4) file transfers across the network are fine, speeds at around 100mbps

Probably won't help but try running network setup on the xp machine and create a disk to run on the win2k machine. My home network of Xp home and xp pro goes wacky sometimes. This seems to be the quickest way to fix those little problems that make no sense.
Try that and let us know if it helped.
Also check your firmware version on the router. then check on the linksys website for a newer one.

Does this still occur if the XP machine is powered down?

Although I beleive reinstalling IE will fix your problem do the below first.

Do the following in the order listed checking if fixed at each step.

Go to device mgr network card advanced, if you have no wireless then make sure that 802.xx is disabled.

From your description you should need only TCI/IP installed. If you have ipx etc, remove them, additionally remove TCP/IP. Shut down (power down for 30 sec or more) then boot back up and reinstall TCP/IP this will correct the TCP/IP stack if it has a problem.

If this don't work uninstall IE. This will not truly uninstall but put you back to the last version. If that fixes it then you can probably update back to IE6.

OR! The following command pasted to the run command will completely reinstall IE!

    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information\W2KEXCP.EXE /u

    Get back to us!

    Mike

well, uninstalling and then reinstalling the tcp/ip protocols worked like a charm...dunno what was wrong before, but it fixed the problem perfectly. speeds are back up to my usual 1.7 megabit speeds...thanks a whole bunch all you guys who helped out!

Glad to hear it and thanks for posting back your results.

The first rash of things you did and info you posted ruled out about 95% of the usual causes. Glad Mike jumped in with the fix for the remaining possiblities.

And yes, "computer browser" was correct. You'll operate a little smoother with that turned off and the speed set for your NICs.
