Tried to update my son's Win XP Home last night, now am on a merry-go-round (infinitely recursive loop?).

Upon booting, I get an error message labeled
    "WINLOGON.exe - Entry Point Not Found "
The procedure entry point AssocIsDangerous could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll.

Clicking out of the above I receive another error box labeled
    "User Interface Failure "
The Logon User Interface DLL msgina.dll failed to load.

Contact your system adminstrator to replace the DLL, or restore the original dll.

Only option is to restart, and then the entire procedure again presents itself...

Hullo out there in the ether! Any help?

As usual, am thanking you folks in advance!

    Hi

Not sure if this will help. If you go to this link & select XPFixes - click on this and you will see a further link to 'Restore Windows Welcome/logon' Download the program & run it from your HD - it will then tell you what is worng and the way to fix it.

Hope this is the same problem.Doug Knox

Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to install anything. The machine proffers only the 2 error boxes...and that's it.

Oh well, I found the "Restore" disk, and will futz with that for a bit.

Thank you for attempting to help!

And I LIKE the Doug Knox site!!!!!

mbcannon2, did you find a solution for your problem? I just had the same problem to occur. All because of updating XP. I bet if I get out of this mess I won't be updating XP anytime soon. I have had nothing but problems using Microsoft's updating site. I will just take my chances with the security flaws when I get running again. No more updating for me.

Daisy, good information, but this error is really bad. Restoring doesn't work. In fact, nothing works and since I didn't have any XP CD's I could just restore the missing files. I have seem a lot of problems in my time and I am sure there our more worse than this, but when you can't start the machine no matter what you try life is not good. I guess the only other time i remember things being worse was when I tried a monitor enhancer and when I restart my system the monitor was totally back. That was fun.

I am in the process of totally restoring my hard. There is if I can get my Recovery CD's to work. So far they refuse to reload my hard drive. I have new ones on the way, but god only know what will happen when I try them. I am using Win 2000 right now, until my CD's get here.

    Thanks for the Info.
