    Hi folks,

Sorry for the lack of response I have been away for a few weeks.
Now that am back, am back to the same old problem.
No. 1. When am using the computer even on line it shuts down and restarts just as if you had pulled the plug and reconnected.
No. 2. The system freezes completely even when am not using it,
CTRL/ALT/DEL does not even work so I have to reset.
I have tried most things suggested in your postings but no change.

    Hi,

Can someone give me a clue to what this is,
FATAL EXCEPTION OE HAS OCCURRED AT 0028:COOA92DA IN VXD AVGCORE (01) + 0002411E
I have found the file AVGCORE VXD but what do I open this file with? I tried with wordpad but it did'nt make much sence I think it may be program writting. The file is for a device driver. How do I find the fault in this file.

This is a first I have seen of an AVG file causing a OE error. You don't open that file, it is a virtual driver. I would suggest uninstalling AVG AV, reboot, then installing AVG.
Did you have Norton or McAffee installed prior to installing AVG?

I think it is now time to un-install any Anti-Virus programs.

IF exists shutdown any Firewall programs.

Boot to a Win98 Startup Disk and reinstall 98SE over itself.

Somwhere in the system there is ( are ) some incompatalbe files that may be causing the error.

Of course how you need to re-install SE depends on whether you have an OEM machine ( HP, Dell, Compaq etc. ) or not.

I firmly believe until this is done the error and boot up prolbems will not stop.

My question wasn't too clear. Did you have at one time another AV program and then uninstalled it? An old Norton or Mcaffee file loading can cause a conflict such as this.
Do this when starting the computer, press F8 or hold CTRL at the "Starting Windows 98 ", in the Startup Menu select the Logged option. This will create the file C:\bootlog.txt. Copy and Paste here.

    Hi,
No, all my my anti-viruses are clear from my system.

I have been trying to reinstall win 98sec over the top but the system just freezes at the first installation setup. I think it may be doing this when ever the win installation program is activated.
    Can someone advise please.

How are you booting the machine to start the reinstall.

I ask because this may now indicated a hardware problem as nothing from the present Windows should be involved UNLESS you booted from the harddrive to start the reinstall.

    Hi Billybob,
I boot the system to normal running, load 98cd rom and from the disc click on the install icon in the programs. This may not be the correct way but this is how it used to work for me before.
    Am open to suggestions.
    Thanks.

No wonder it is freezing, you are running setup from within Windows. Setup runs best from pure dos.
You should run the install by booting from a floppy. Create one by going to Control Panel\Add Remove Programs, click on Start Up disk, put a floppy in and click Create Disk.
Then shut down and reboot with the floppy in the drive, select With CDRom Support, watch the screen for the drive letter for the CD, it will not be the normal letter. If all you have for the hard drive is C:. it may be E:
    When the floppy is finished loading you will see A:\> on the screen, type in the following;
    E:\win98\setup <enter>
That's it. You may be asked to save the old windows files, I wouldn't, what for? It isn't working right. Make sure that it installs into C:\Windows, you will get a prompt for this, and for the Product ID number for windows.
    Good luck!

I have to ask. And then say why I ask.

Which version of SE do you have ?

    The full is fine.
    TheUPGRADE is fine

Both of these work well as per suggestions by markp62

But if you have the UPDATE ( $20 ) version you may be SOL as far as re-installing.

If you do have the UPDATE version you more than likely will need to format, reinstall 98 and then run the UPDATE. And after that the UPDATE does need to be run from within a Normal Windows.

Also if you have the UPDATE version I suggest you go with XP if you can not find the Full or UPGRADE version.

Coming into this late and don't mean to confuse the situation, however ........

You mentioned K6-II and a Virtual device driver error along with other lockups and hiccups. By any chance are you running a scanner, printer or anything else (camera) with a recent Twain driver installed?

There is a known timing/instruction set problem with K6-II CPU's (usually sub 350mhz) and Windows 98 - be it the original or SE. Usually manifests itself as various VXD errors. You should be able to find this referenced in the MS knowlegebase.

I've run into this specifically with some models of HP scanners - K6-II systems ran fine for years then customers (yes, plural - seen it a few times) installed scanning software and poof - big problem.

Nothing will resolve this specific situation except reformat and clean install and no reinstall of problem causing device. Similarly, Microsoft has no fix.

Just mentioned it in case anything new along these lines parallels your situation.

    ;)

That number means nothiing. It is the same on all three versions. Or at least on the UPGRADE and the UPDATE versions.

That is the number that I showed when I used the UPDATE CD. And is what he UPGRADE version I have shows when viewing the properties of MY Computer.

It is what is printed on the CD itself that counts.

And If you paid more than $20 it is NOT the UPDATE version.

I do not think the UPDATE version ods even available anymore.

    Also something that I forgot.

If you bought 98SE Retail ( in a store ) then it is unlikely that it will be the UPDATE version.

The Update was only available from MS.

    Hi troubles back!
This has been a long day. I got to install win98 with dos but not without problems. For some reason files were missing which I found on the cd rom 98 and installed manually apart from this one.
KERNEL SYSTEM RENDERER IS LOOKING FOR A DRIVER.
I click on INSTALL DRIVER ect.... then it comes up with File KSUSER.DLL cannot be found on win98 cd.
But it is! the file is in DRIVER12.CAB but to install this file it would have to go into driver12 on my computer system, the problem is I cannot find this driver on my system and no program seems to want this driver.
    HELP

    Hi,
After all the kind help you all gave the only thing I could do was to f/disc my hard drive. It took some time to get up and running, the backup discs I had were old so there was alot of download updates to be done. Everthing so far is running good.
There is onething good out of all this, that the more that goes wrong the more you learn. (THE HARD WAY)
    Thanks for everyones help.
