Incorrect Function

    Hi Everyone,
I'm getting an "Incorrect Function D: Is not accessible" error when trying to read a DVD-RW in my Cendyne DVD-RW drive. Originals and DVD-Rs can be read. Nothing I could find on the net is of any help.

The drive was working fine for 8 months or so. I was able to rip HDD and burn to DVD-RW and then to DVD-R with no problems. But now, I can't select the drive as a recorder in my burning software (Record Now Max).

I've uninstalled the software, the drives, the ASPIs, editing the Registry, etc etc with no luck. In the end, re-installed Win XP Pro but it still doesn't work. I tried swapping IDE channels, swapping master, slave, CS, etc...I'm at a loss.

A few funny things, in Windows Explorer, the drive shows up as "DVD-R drive" when the drive is empty, when I insert a DVD-RW (blank or previously written) it shows up as "CD-ROM drive ".

In Device Manager, BOTH my CD-RW and DVD-RW show up as Unknown devices, deleting and letting Windows re-install them doesn't help. Flashing the firmware of the DVD-RW drive does no good either. Mobo is an ECS KS57A with AMD Duron 900MHz.
There were no mfr. software or drivers as it seems that Windows can run these drives on their own...yeah right...

I have no idea why this happened all of a sudden...it's got to be the drive because it does the same thing in my wife's computer.
I emailed Cendyne and am waiting for an answer, anyone know the number to their California based help-desk? I lost the manual a long time ago and they don't put phone numbers on their website.

    Thanks,
    Owen

Wow! I am having a very similar problem with mr Yamaha CDRW (see hardware post "perplexing CDRW Problem "). I too have an AMD 900MHz Duron.

I am lead to believe that my controller is going bad. Am thinking seriously about getting a separte IDE Controller (I think thats what it is called), but eventually I will probably be needing a new PC.

I am very curious to know if you ever find a solution as it will probably help me too.

    Good Luck

Well, I updated my burning software and the drives are now recognized in Windows. However, RWs are still not recognized...a separate IDE controller might do it, but somehow I still think it's a Windows problem.
I'm going to update my mobo BIOS and see if that helps, otherwise I'll have to get a IDE card too.

Anyone know of any cheap HDD enclosures? Like stackable RAID ones for IDE drives. I'm out of space in the PC case and in the HDDs themselves.

    Thanks,
    Owen
