I doubt it is XP that is causing your computer to run slowly. Have you checked it with Spybot and AdAware recently? Have you run a defrag lately? Made any hardware or software changes right before the problems started? What are your computer's specs?Sounds to me like something else may be going on. I use XP on a cable connection, and my pages load as fast as I can click.

    Ironhorse,

How long have you had this PC? There was a critical update Q811493 issued by M$ 16 April which slowed down many PC's to a crawl. The update was re-issued 29 May and is OK.

Do these dates coincide with your acquisition of the PC?

Do you regularly visit Windows Update for the critical updates? If you don't I am thinking that your PC may have the old version of the patch installed and this may be the source of the problem.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and scroll down to Windows XP (SP2) Hotfixes - do you see Q811493?

Remove it and see if this solves the problem - then visit Windows Update and install the latest version.

A long shot, but it may help.

I would return it to the supplier before the warranty runs out - it is clearly not right.

I agree with what you say about VIA - the web site is fine, but the download servers can be very temperamental. However I strongly suggest that you install the latest Hyperion 4 in 1 drivers, download from :

Even though the computer has been like this since you got it I suggest that you give it a good clean - follow Mike's post in this thread for 'Clean up good!' -

Let us know how you get on.

What amount of RAM came installed on the PC? If it's less than 256Mb (say 128) then yes this on it's own will cause the PC to appear very sluggish. 256 is really the minimum, and above this up to 512 will usually improve general system speed from arguably 5-10% loosely speaking!
