A friend of mine has the Blaster worm. She's downloaded the patch and updated McAfee virus definitions Aug 12 but it doesn't detect the virus; however, she still has it in her System 32 file. Does anyone know if it would be safe for her to try using the free Symantec removal tool even though she has McAfee installed on her computer.

This should be OK. I ran the Symantec removal tool on by brother-in-laws machine. He also runs McAfee. The Symantec tool does a scan for the virus. It doesn't do anything if no virus is found.

I think you have the same situation as my post Blaster w/o Blaster.exe.

In my case neither McAfee nor the removal tool detected the virus, but XP kept shutting down with the RPC error. My solution was to download the patch on another machine and apply it to the infected machine while off-line.

    Good Luck

The Virus Removal Tool runs regardless of your Virus Program. It would run even if there was not Virus Program on the PC. You are able to watch it as it scans for the Blaster Worm. If it's there, it will assist in removal. If not, it indicates so at the end.

Can't hurt anything to run it.

There are now 5 distinct variants of the critter and a couple are probably newer than virus def files loaded on the 12th.
