back a few months ago i had this weird thing happening with my computer every few days, or weeks...just randomly....but i would be doing something on my computer (internet, games, etc) and come back to my desktop to see that my recycle bin showed to have something in it....like normal i would right click, and click empty recycle bin. i would then get a window saying that windows cannot delete the file 'WINDOWS'. sometimes i would have other things in the bin for deleting as well, and it would still dump those. if i opened the recycle bin window to look for this 'WINDOWS' file, the bin would appear to be empty....if i hit restore items, nothing would happen. the bin would still show to have something in it via the icon, and if i hit empty i would get the same cannot delete file window.
i didn't think much of it then, 'cause if i restarted my computer or turned it off, the file wouldn't be in the recycle bin any more and everything would be fine. the computer ran fine while this was supposidly in the bin as well.
now it's been quite some time since i've had this happen again, but as of about a few hours ago i began getting this annoying little windows that repeatedly say:
"Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files.......Insert your Windows Professional CD-ROM now. "
i have posted about those before and i am going to run the same process Mike told me to run last time.

so....pretty much the question for this thread at the time, why is the file 'WINDOWS' trying to delete its self?

    Hello Reign Holder,

The only file called Windows in XP is the windows folder. Do you have any idea what type of file resides or resided in the Recycle bin by that name?

Normally, if you run into this kind of reponse, that windows can't delete something, usually will delete if done in safe mode.

But hold off on doing anything, see if someone else comes up with more info on this.

    Regards - Charles

This sounds very much like viral activity - suggest you run an online virus check such as Housecall to eliminate - or otherwise, this possibility.

i have no idea what kinda of files are in it....like i said, i can't "see" the file in the bin....so i don't have the slightest what it is.....

and i have a feeling it is viral...last time it was from Kazaa...but i don't have that anymore after i fixed it last time.
the process that Mike had me run was a series of virus tests and file clearing and whatnot...
i haven't had a chance to do it yet, but i'll post back with my positive or negative results....

hopefully i won't need any further help....

but i still would like to know a possible answer for my original question. unless i'm being stoopid and it was already answered as best as possible.

    Aaron,

I don't think there is a 'simple' answer to your question, but possible answers will arise as you work through the problem.

Run through the series of tests that Mike outlined and see if that clears the problem.

If not I guess there is the possibility that the Recycle Bin has become corrupted - although this seems to be a long shot - more info here as to how to fix that
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm under R = Recycle Bin.

    Are you using a firewall?
