    Hi MIR11,

    OK.

Look at this thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17456&highlight=print+screen for text printing.

Can't CAPTURE image files from the desktop using XP alone. You can capture certain images in websites using XP. Will ask where to save it; however, I don't think that's your question.

So in order to do what you want with Desktop images, you're going to have overcome your dislike of "referalls to unknown sources ".

    Regards - Charles

I use Gadwin Printscreen. It's free, fast and saves your screen to a jpg or other image file (your choice) and puts it where you specify.

MIR11 (and any others reading this who have the same, very reasonable reservations) - rest assured that any poster on here with very many posts will almost certainly not be giving you bad or dangerous information. Any who persisted in trying that would have been banned from the forum.

If you wait for a day before downloading a recommended app, I can guarentee it will be safe since in that time, someone else would have posted a warning or caution. There are several hundred to maybe over a thousand years of computing experience looking in here every day and it would be a rare bad thing that no one was familiar with - rare to non-existent.

That being said, my personal preference for this sort of chore is Irfanview. There are other good capture apps out there but I've personally used this one for over 5 years and it is rock solid plus it will easily do what you want. Alt-PrtScrn and paste it into Irfanview.

You can also use the app for quite a few other picture editing jobs and so avoid a dedicated screen capture utility unless you do lots of that and need the specialized features you find with them.

a big Thanks to Charlesvar, Johanna, and Newt.
Thanks for the great replies. i find the answers here, and the people behind the answers are Great as opposed to About.com/Windows forum.
There are some good/great people over there, but there are some who answer just to be heard( i guess,) even though they do not have the answer, or they interject something that is "off the track/thread "which sometimes starts a new discussion inside the original thread...

OK, I'm probably missing something here, but why do you need special software to do this?

I just hit <Alt> <Print Screen> and then paste it into Word. So far I haven't found anything that appears on my screen that I haven't been able to print.

Margot, I tried this, and I can't paste a screencap to Word. What am I doing wrong? Can you tell me what you do, step by step?
    TIA

Images are ALL it will do--it just captures what's on the screen. For instance, if you use it to print your desktop, it shows the toolbars and all.

The <Alt> key, though, does make the <Print Screen> key capture just the top window, instead of everything showing if you have layers there.

Our mainframe Oracle software is not set up to print locally, so I use this feature constantly to capture images of things I need for paper backup.

Johanna, I open Word and set it to landscape.

I get the image I want on screen (I just opened a satellite photo of Hurricane Lili in Explorer.)

I hold down the <Alt> key and hit the <Print Screen> key.

I switch to Word and right click to select Paste.

The image appears along with the toolbar on the Word document and I click print.

You can do the same in Paint as well. Sometimes you might want to highlight something or add arrows.
