The patch is a good idea and was not included with SP1. You will just need the proper version for whatever operating system version you use. Several links elsewhere to the proper Microsoft site.

While all the major Anti Virus companies are now doing a good job of blocking this particular virus (MSBlast.exe is doing the main bad stuff) unless you have the patch, a new variation that went after the same weakness could still cause you problems. The patch closes the "hole ".

Helia: If you're running Windows XP Home Edition with the SP1 pack, you want to select the patch for Microsoft Windows XP Home SP1.

If the Microsoft site says your updates are all up to date, that's good news. You don't need to get any updates at that time. But it's a good idea to check with them from time to time to see if any new updates have been developed. Sometimes MS will notify you when that's the case.

    OK?

The Patch you should be looking for to protect against the MBlast Worm is "KB823980-x86-E NU" Try Microsoft Update page, might be available there.

If you will check your Control Panel under Add/Remove, it should show if you have downloaded the patch earlier, number as above.

    Hello Helia,

Right clicking on "MY Computer" > properties > general tab will tell you what version of XP and Service Pack installed.

XP Home can only be 32 bit version, not 64.

    Regards - Charles

That number in the Control Panel is just fine. The rest of it was just part of the download. You are in good shape. Just keep everything updated and you will be fine.
