I recently installed Service Pack 1 for Windows XP on my computer, but I don't think it installed correctly, and I think it's the cause of some error problems I'm having with MSIE. When I downloaded Service Pack 1, towards the very end of installation it errored, so it didn't finish installing correctly. When I look under Add or Remove programs I see this: http://www.diamond-road.net/misc/addremove-sp1.jpg (screenshot)

That looks odd to me, like the ones with the red icon are not installed correctly? Is it supposed to look like that?

Anyways, the errors I'm having in Internet Explorer (version 6.0) occur when I try to open in Internet Explorer a .php file that I have stored on my computer. Also, when I right click on an iframe on a web site and choose to "Refresh" it, it also errors. I have also noticed just recently that I'm getting the error randomly while surfing the web now and it closes the browser. None of this stuff ever happened before (attempting) to install Service Pack 1.

    The error I'm getting says:

"Internet Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. "

I don't know if I should uninstall Service Pack 1, because when I try to it warns me that "the following programs may not work properly" or whatever, and then it lists every single program I have installed, all of which were installed before Sevice Pack 1. I don't know if that's normal either. I'm not even sure if uninstalling it would work correctly seeing as it didn't even install correctly.

Any help would be appreciated :)

    Thanks, Michelle

    My advice:
    1. Remove SP1.
    2. Reinstall it, and make sure it doesn't error - this is most likely your problem.
    3. Install IE6 SP1.

    Thanks!

I'm not sure what IE6 SP1 is. Does that come in SP1 or is it something I have to get seperately?

I just uninstalled, and then reinstalled Service Pack 1 (it said that IE 6 SP1 was included), and then downloaded the other critical updates which included a patch for IE 6 SP1, but I am still receiving the errors I mentioned above.

I notcied that during the time Service Pack 1 was uninstalled, I wasn't getting the error when refreshing iframes, but I would still get it when trying to open .php files on my computer through Internet Explorer. The only .php files I can open in IE are the ones without any actual PHP coding in them.

My Add or Remove Programs list looks like this:
    http://www.diamond-road.net/misc/addremove-sp1-2.jpg

Can anyone tell me if that's how the list is supposed to look? And also what else I could do to fix these errors I'm getting? I wasn't getting them before Service Pack 1.

    Thanks

Hi Michelle, I don't have Windows XP so my knowledge is not that widespread. I have read quite a bit though about problems with the service Pack for XP. While your waiting for somebody with more know how than I , maybe this will be of some assistance ->
    PC World
Have you looked in Microsoft's site for any problems like yours?

Good Luck Michelle, I hope that you are able to get it fixed!!

Well, I haven't yet been able to fix the problems I've been having, and now I'm also getting driver errors, but I haven't even changed my drivers at all. Today I got a "The system has recovered from a serious error" message due to a driver, and I did some searching and some people have said SP1 has some part in it. So I'm thinking of using System Restore to restore my computer to how it was right before I installed SP1. Does anyone think this would be a good/bad idea? I don't want to make things worse.

    Thanks :)

If your installation of Windows XP happens to have a serial key that has been used by someone else, the installation of SP1 will typically fail.
