java causes ie to freeze

I usually use ie6. On certain webpages my browser will freeze up and I'll have to close it down with the ctrl+alt+delete thing. Every time this happens a java icon appears on my system tray (i think it's called a system tray, I'm VERY beginner on computers, it's the bottom right on my monitor) and remains there until I close down the browser. Once the browser is closed if I move my mouse over the icon it disappears. Anyway, I know very little about computers or java or ie. Any help would be appreciated.

 

I don't know if this will help, but have you updated Windows recently? Go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
