I have been having problems with IE6 and would like to reinstall. I saw the following information on the subject and tried it:

    1.) Run: regedt32

    2.) Navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

3.) Change the value of IsInstalled to 0.

4.) Download and run IE6 setup:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie...sp1/default.asp

Everything seem to be going ok until around 21% of the install when the installation just stopped and a message appeared tell me that the file I was trying to install was not Designed for Windows and cannot be installed. I have seem warming about software or hardware that have not been certified for XP, but it gave be the option to stop or continue. How can IE6 a Microsoft product not be designed for XP.

Needless to say but I need help on this one.

    Thanks,
    Bob

Be sure the version you are installing is for XP.
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q318378

    Try this:

Go to Start > Run and type:

    cmd

In the command window, type each of these lines with an >Enter> after each:

    net stop cryptsvc
    ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
    net start cryptsvc
    exit

    Retry the installation.

    IE6 Reinstall Prroblem

Abraxas, I tried the change you suggested. the only problem is when I typed in the second command starting with ren.... and hit enter I got a ren not found reply. Question, was I suppose to edit the registry first by changing the value of IsInstalled to 0.

    Thanks for the help.

    IE6 Reinstall Problem

Me again. I got the cmds to work and tried the reinstall again. Unfortunately I got the same message again. It reads: "The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP" "This software will not be installed "

I let the install run until it said 100% installed. However, nothing happened until I click OK in the message box. Then I was told that the following conponents were not installed. IE6 was listed has not installed. I then click next and was told to restart the computer. I restarted the computer and was told IE6 had been uninstalled, but I could still start it up.

As I said before why would Microsoft be saying that IE6 SP1 is not compatible for Windows XP. Is there another version.

This error message is usually due to catalog database corruption, and should be fixed by the series of commands you tried. There is a specific patch for that problem at WindowsUpdate.

I'd suggest getting all the WindowsUpdates that you can (did you say IE is working now?) and trying it again.

Have you altered the configuration of running services in any way? The cryptographic service should be set to automatic.

If that doesn't help, I'd opt for a repair installation of XP.

The regedit you specified needs only to be applied immediately before trying to reinstall IE6.

Did you download a fresh copy of IE6 SP1 for XP?

Microsoft be saying that IE6 SP1 is not compatible for Windows XP.

I checked and XP already has IE6 xpsp2 installed by default I believe. At least that is what Help/About IE says.

I was not aware that there was a IE6 download for XP.

And it would be very nice if MS would give us back the repair of IE function.

Billybob, I agree with everything you said, but the only version of IE6 that I can find is SP1, which is for XP at Windows website:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp

I just can't figure this one out. Nothing I have tried will let me get around this mess. I didn't get a copy of XP with my PC. HP wanted to save some money so they used up my hard drive space to store the preloaded software that's on my system. The only problem is it is an all or nothing recovery. I don't have CD's to use.

If anyone else has any thoughts about this mess I would like to here them.

    Thanks

Within the above quote my well lie the answer. ( or at least part of same ).

HP=Hewlet Packard which we refer to as an OEM machine and may very well have its own proprietory way of doing things.

And with that machine it could very be an all or nothing re-install/repair.

In other words I am not much help.

I just wish that we had the same capability of doing a repair of IE like we did in 98.

One final note to my IE6 problems. I found my problem. It was Windows XP Service Pack 1. I delete this update and everything is working again. I am going back to my original version and take my chances. I have had nothing but trouble with XP updates. This is not the first time. That is the reason I remove it. Thanks Mircosoft.

BillyBob--For the day I move to WinXP, could you explain your statement "I just wish that we had the same capability of doing a repair of IE like we did in 98. "?
    I thought that
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q318378
is supposed to fill that function, though it certainly looks complicated and seems to confuse reinstallation with repair in several places.

Jim, BillyBob is talking about repairing IE by simply opening the add & remove program, finding IE, click on the add/remove buttom and select repair buttom. This feature is not in XP.

    Hope this helps.
