    Hi All,
After f-disking my four year old Dell laptop and installing Windows 98, then upgrading to Windows 98 second edition, the Modem does not show in Device Manager. Instead, I see something called "Other Devices" with a yellow question mark and two yellow sub-headings, called PCI Communication Device and PCI Multimedia Audio Device.

I have access to a similar Dell Laptop (Windows 98 se) which does not have the "Other Devices" nor the sub-headings but does show a LT Win Modem, File Version 5.4.2. It is my recollection that this was part of the f-disked laptop.

I hesitate to attempt installing a new internal modem (external not an option) because of the compact construction. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to install software for the modem hardware part of the f-disked unit and how to remove the yellow "Other Devices?" Thank you.

    One question.

Why did you have to install 98 and then upgrade to98SE ?

Unless you have the UPDATE version of SE this is not necessary.

The SE UPGRADE will go in clean.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I goofed. What I added was Windows98 Second Edition UPDATES. Do you have any advice now that I've awakened?

    OK that answers my question.

The UPDATE may be OK if you installed over a fresh install of 98. But I had had 98 in for quite some time before I did it and it was one problem after another.

But the only way you could get the full or UPGRADE installed would be to reformat and put it in clean. If you can get hold of an UPGRADE copy it just might be worth it before you get too much stuff loaded.

I say this as once the UPDATE is installed it has to to re-installed from within Windows. And if you get a case where Windows won't load you are Sure Out of Luck with no choice but to wipe out and start over. I had to do that ONCE. Now the UPDATE CD is at the bottom of the brook out in the back yard.

    As to the Modem problem.

It is not unusual for that to happen with and Internal Modem.

But I see you have a LapTop so I would have no idea how to go about fixing that.

    BillyBob,

This is the situation I had and I experienced no problems except for the MODEM condition. To carry this discussion a little further, it may be that the software for the modem is part of the CAB files. I looked in there and got lost. Maybe someone can provide more direction. Thank you for your interest.
