Daughters Compaq messed up re. monitor

She has a Compaq of bout 2 yrs old and something like 475MB processor. I don't think she has kept up with Compaq updates and her monitor is kinda iffy and some pix I sent her are too dark to view. Seen by all else in good shape. She has tried to adjust the brightness, contrast and etc on the monitor itself but doesn't help. I believe she has the latest driver for her monitor but not absolutely sure. I looked at it on a recent trip and it is definitely not up to par. Any ideas? And TIA for tips or answers.

New drivers is a no go here. Dim monitor, fading colors, & shrinking in on sides mean type to look for a brighter future for the youngin'
