    Hello folks,
Ive come here for a little advice, and Ill try to return some when I can.
We have a computer w/ Windows Me and it's time for a new OS b/c Me has become very slow and crashes more and more, plus I just want Win2K on it. My question is should I uninstall Me and then install windows, or just do a straight upgrade? Whats the best route for a clean running system?

    Thanks,
    R

The "best" way would be to format the drive and do a nice fresh clean install of Win2k.

Windows Me to Windows 2000 Upgrade Is Not Supported

M$ says not to do the upgrade since ME actually came out before Win2k did. But, I did once for the fun of it without problems.

It is not a good idea to install ANTHING overtop of ANY existing OS that has problems such as you describe. The problems may well carry right over.

From experience it is not a good idea to install anything overtop of Windows ME reagardless of condition.

Overtop of a well working 98FE or 98SE things can go quite well.

But they must also be as error free as possible.

HA! I thought this would be easy,... I went to My Computer and highlighted the C Drive, and went to Format in the File menu. Now I see I can't do it that way.

Ive spent the last half hour searching the forum for instructions to format a hard drive, but all the threads on the topic seem to either be not relevent to my scenerio, or out of my understanding. Is there a simple way to do this? If not I wouldn't ask anyone to type instructions for me or anything, but if you could point me to a resourse on the web that would explain what to do in my case, I would be greatfull. I have thumbed around Microsoft's support page, but it dosen't seem to address the issue of formating a hard drive. Thanks again.

You Should be able to make a Startup Disk ( floppy ) that wll handle the job.

Start~Settings~Control Panel~Add/Remove Programs and select the Startup Disk tab

Would like to HIGHLY recommend you get an experienced buddy to help you out. On a good day, an experienced person could do this in a few hours. On a bad day, it could take WEEKS to get your pc back up and running.

You do know that formatting will wipe EVERYthing off your computer don't you? Have you backed up everything you want to keep? You might also need all sorts of drivers etc...

Thanks Steve and BillyBob. I am aware that all will be lost, and it shouldn't be a problem to get the drivers I need. Unfortunatly I don't have an experianced buddy to come over and help me out on this. The link you gave me Billy on how to use fDisk is no longer avalible. I think I know how to format the HD from DOS, but the only way I know how to run DOS in ME is FROM ME,....which gives the a "drive cannot be formated because drive C: is in use" error.

Before I figure out exactly how-to and go ahead with formating the HD, is there another option of uninstalling ME and putting 2K in its place without formating? Or would that just be the same as "upgrading" or "putting it on top of ME "?

And really, thanks for helping me out on this one.

If you make the startup disk ( I believe ME will do that still ) and set the BIOS to boot sequence A: C: then restart the machine with the floppy inserted you will have no problems formating C:

Windows is not even in the picture at that time.

I know of no other way of getting rid of ME completely.

Oh BTW. I do not recall seing what kind of a machine you have. If you have a Dell, Compaq, HP, Gateway etc. things may need to be done differently anyway. If you format the HD you may lose some of the stuff that NEEDS to stay.

    my machine is a HP.

That more than likely will take more knowledge than I have. It may take special handling.

I had only one OEM machine ( 15 years ago ) and have not had one since.
