    Hi Romona,

I don't know if this has a tie-in to my mailing list problem but I posted it seperately so others can see it.

I've just found out that I can't download any files. I tried several sites and when I try to download I get a message that the file can't be read. I can save PDF files however.

BTW I am using XP pro.

    Hi Cal,

    Try this:

    Close Netscape
    Navigate to the Profile folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt
    Rename this file:
    mimeTypes.rdf
    to
    mimeTypes.old

Start Netscape and see if you can download...

Post back and let us know.

    No fix

    Hi Romona,

Sorry, but that didn't work. When I start a download I get the following message.

"C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\TEMP\hh3kp1v6.exe could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.
Try again later, or contact the server administrator. "

I believe the "hh3kp1v6.exe" is the file name and it appears to change when I try other files.

Could this be a permissions problem? What happens if you run netscape as administrator? Can you download files?

I am logged on as Administrator.

One more item I just noticed. The file name changes each time I go to the same site and attempt a download. Actually never is the file name the same as what it should be according to what the server link calls it.

I'm going to run McAfee just to check if anything is infected.

    One more item.

I needed a driver for someone and so I resorted to using IE (shudder, gasp) and that allowed me to download.

    Hi Cal,

There are two bugs on this issue, both of which are "FIXED ", altho it seems that users still have this problem. I found this workaround which may, or may not work, since the other workaround was a bust. At any rate, worth a try:

    Close Netscape:
    Do a Find for compreg.dat
    Rename the file to: Xcompreg.dat
    The file is located in:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\components

Let us know if this enables you to download using Netscape.

Sorry. But that doesn't help either.

As as look at this deeper, I see that although the line at the bottom of the NS browser window shows the ftp path and the file name the first three times I try to download the same file when the error dialog show up the file name is wrong except for the extension. Each attempt gives a different filename. Finally on the 3rd attempt I simply go into limbo.

I then need to exit NS and reload to get even the start of a download.

Just on a whim, I have made sure my McAfee is up to date and done a virus scan. No problem.

I'm tempted to reload NS, but with my other recent problem, I am a bit skidish.

    Hi Cal,

Don't uninstall yet. Take a look here:

Edit | Preferences | Navigator | Helper Applications

What do you see there (if anything) associated with downloading. I run Windows 98SE, and this is my Helper App. for downloading: Screen Shot

    Let us know,

    Same Problem!!!

I have been having the same problem since I upgraded to 7.1. I get a lot of email with pics attached and I can't save to disk. I thought it was only an email issue till I read this post so I tried and also get the same message as everyone else is getting. I have been having to forward my email to another account and open them in Outlook :( . It seems like everytime Netscape gives us an upgrade we have to go through this debugging process. Kinda' reminds me of Windows :( Upgrades. You would think a major bug like this would be addressed pretty quickly instead of letting us do all the beta testing for them. Anyway Ramona I thank you :) for all your hard work in trying to help us with these bugs and I hope you come up with a fix for this one ASAP.

    Thanks,
    LTH

    TO LTH

I just saw your message. I'm not sure exactly how long I've had 7.1, but it was working for me. So, based on your experience, it is probably something to do with a change being made to 7.1

    LTH,

That's great! Now let me ask you this; had you installed 7.1 OVER your previous version?

    Thanks,

    Cal,

Saw another user posting with your same problem. This was how he solved his:

"Yet another person with that problem. I did some more Internet search and found an advice to delete or rename Netscape/components/compreg.dat .
Actually I had to delete it twice but finally downloads started working again without reinstall or reboot. "

Aside from this, I'm out of workarounds and ideas, other than a reinstall. BTW, You won't lose your Address Book, if you reinstall Netscape. It won't have any effect on your Profile. Just use the Add/Remove, and uninstall. Reboot the PC, then reinstall Netscape.

    Ramona :D

EDIT: O.K. I lied, and I have one more idea... Do a "Find" for downloads.rdf Delete the file. This may or may not help, but worth a try.

    LTH,

That could very well be why you were experiencing the problem. It is strongly recommended that you not install 7.1 over earlier 7.x Versions.

This problem seems to be popping up more frequently, and I am curious as to which users have installed over a previous version, rather than doing a clean install.

    Thanks!

    Ramona :D

The "downloads.rdf" deletion did not help.

The reinstall of 7.1 seems to have corrected it.

Thanks for all your time and input.

    Hi Cal,

Good to hear that the reinstall worked!
Let me ask you, did you install Netscape 7.1 on top of 7.02? I'm trying to find out why the fixes I gave you work for some and not for others. Also trying to establish if installing 7.1 over an existing Netscape 7.x is the cause of the problem.

    Thanks!

    Ramona,

I have to say, I don't remember. I recently moved (mid-July) and was off-line for about a week.

I must have been among the first to update to 7.1 because I was using it for quite awhile. The only other problem I've had with it was one you address in another thread - the loss of an address list. On the whole I find it to be working smoothly and fast.

If I had to guess I'd say I did not do the "clean" install. Most apps that I upgrade work well by overlayng them, and since I was/am short on time with the new home, I probably took the fastest (?) way.

    Cal
