I have a computer I am working on that you can not read the email message without double clicking the message header. It does not have a bar that says subject and from. Any body here have a idea any help would be greatly appreciated, Gary

In OE click view>layout and make sure there's a checkmark next to show preview pane. Also, if you want to be to see the to and from thing, put a checkmark next to show preview pane header.

The OE preview pane may have been disabled to prevent html/spam messages from being opened automatically when selected, or for security reasons, since some script virues will execute automatically when previewed on unpatched systems. This is from
    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/enc.detection.html
    ================copy/paste====================
The detection of an encoded script is the result of the script using a vulnerability that affects some versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer, and therefore Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. This vulnerability, if not patched with a Microsoft program update, allows a virus, worm, or Trojan to be executed just by reading or previewing the email message. Information on this problem, which is known as a MIME header exploit, can be found at:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-020.asp
    (snip)
Turn off the preview function in Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express:

NOTE: The following is provide for your convenience. The steps may vary, depending on your version. For additional information, read the product document or online help.

    1. Click "Ignore the problem and continue with the infected file. "
    2. Do one of the following:
o In Microsoft Outlook, click the View menu, and then make sure that the Preview Pane menu item is not selected.
o In Outlook Express, click the View menu, and then click Layout. Uncheck Show Preview Pane.

Other reasons to leave preview pane disabled:

How do I delete an email message without opening it?
Click View| Layout and remove the check mark in front of Preview Pane. You can also add the Preview button to the toolbar to quickly turn it on and off.

    http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/problems/performance.htm
Leaving the Preview Pane open in combination with opening directly to the Inbox can result in a slower startup. You can turn the Preview Pane off under View| Layout, or add the Preview button to the OE toolbar to toggle the pane on and off with a single click.
    See
    http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/tips/oe_toolbars.htm

(In OE5.5 go to View Layout Customize toolbar to add or remove the Preview Pane button from the toolbar)

garyl--I also have to double click to open Outlook Express email messages (or right click and then click Open). I just thought that was the way OE worked (unless you use Preview Pane).
Is there a one click method to open OE emails without using Preview Pane?
P.S. I do not use Preview Pane for the various security reasons mentioned by Alice.

The only way I know of to look at the contents of a message without opening it or using the preview pane is to right click on the header, go to Options, then the Details tab, then Message Source button.

The only single-click method I know of to open a message is to buy a 4- or 5-button mouse and program one of the buttons to perform a double click when pressed once. I use the thumb button for that and it's quite handy.

Miz--Think you meant to say right click on header and go to Properties (rather than Options), then Details|Message Source.
At least that is the way my OE6 works.:)

Thanks for the feedback garyl. [dripping sarcasm]

Some of the most knowledgeable people on this board have responded to your question and no reply from you.

Even if Welshjim says he's a "beginner ".
