    Hello all!

2 problems I am encountering on some pc's with Word 2000 running on Win98 SE.

    1) On closing any Word document, it advises that changes have been made to the Normal.dot template and promts me to either save or ignore the changes. This happens every time even when I absolutely have not done anything that would change the Normal template!

    2) Auto Text & Auto Correct entries are not saved after closing Word down.

Does anyone know why? Can I correct these problems?

    Thanks for your help

    Suzie

I'm not a Word expert by any means, but I think your Auto Text & Auto Correct entries are made to the Normal.dot template unless you specify otherwise. When you say No when it asks you to save changes, you are throwing out the Auto Text & Auto Correct entries you made.

The other possiblity is that your Normal.dot template is corrupt but I doubt this is the case since it sounds like this is happening on more than one PC. Unless you're pointing to a shared Normal.dot located on a network resource, then I can see why multiple PC's would be having the problem.

    Thanks for your reply Hulka,

the machines in question run Word on their local hard drives but most documents created are stored on the network server. The prompt to save changes to Normal.dot happens even if no changes have been made to either the document or Auto Text. Also, whenever I add something to Auto Text/Correct on my machine at home or work I never get a prompts to save changes to Normal.dot but the changes always "stick" anyway.

I'm a bit puzzled but I'll check the machines in question when I return to work tomorrow. It's happening on 3 of our 10 network machines. Thinking about it, these machines are all shared by 2 different users who would log on to Windows and the Network individually. I wonder whether something's happening in relation to that?

    Fingers crossed!

    Thanks again
    Suzie

Prob # 1 -> Open word and then close it. Saying YES to the prompt "should" make the message go away. Or, search for Normal.dot and rename it to normal.old. Next time you open word, it'll get re-created.

Yeah, Word has some quirky problems with Normal.dot and various other Saving issues. I always had a problem in Word 97 that it would ask me if I would like to save changes to a document I was viewing even though I did not change anything. I figured this would go away with Word 2002 (OfficeXP) but same issue.

Steve's advice should most likely resolve your issue. Thanks Steve!

    Thanks

    Thanks Steve for your help.

I think I've found the problem and (don't ask for details!) it seems to be something to do with macros - possibly installed as a result of installing ViaVoice - voice recognition software.

Having disabled macros, everything seems all right now. Only thing is that when I start up Word it reminds me that macros have been disabled & I have to "OK" twice before I can get in.

If I start a brand new normal.dot it might prevent this I suppose. But the staff have added loads of AutoText entries which they'd hate to lose if I switch templates.

    Anyway, thanks again
