I am often torn between the ole adage " if it's not broken, don't fix it " and staying current with new applications.
Currently I notice a new version of JAVA (1.4.2) has been released and am looking for sage advise/input on why one would (or would not) upgrade to the latest version.
    I'm a Win98 and Netscape 7.1 user ...

    Hello

I agree if it's working why try to fix it !!

The only guidance I can give is to the BUG fixes the new version has. You could check these to see if any affect you.

I feel that some bugs may be OS set up related as everyone has different combinations etc With Java I am not sure as it may be a security issue.

I had to abandon Sun Java as it just did not seem to work well with my laptop. I have reverted to M$ Java as I have XP SP1. I know this is no longer supported but for now I am using it until I have no other option.

    Look HERE
    To check the 'Bug Fixes'

    Hope this helps

Thanks for this info. I have time left then ;)

I know they removed it from SP1a but when I get my new PC I am going to use my SP1 disc as I want to have M$ Java due to a few problems with Sun's Java.

Will read more on the links for information. One other thing - is it OK just to uninstall Sun Java from Add/Remove programs?

    Thanks again

Personally, I think Sun's product is inferior to Microsoft's. It seems slow and logy, and causes the "wobblies" on some machines. But there are some sites that simply don't work correctly without it.

So, I installed Sun's version along with Microsoft's and then, using the Java applet that Sun's puts in the Control Panel, removed it's integration into IE. That way it is still around if needed.

The most recent MS Java VM can be downloaded here for SP1a, possibly SP2, and a rainy day:

Abraxas--Actually the download from boxermath is not the latest version of MS VM (it is version 3805), and it requires a security fix, which can be had at Windows Update.
But simpler is to get the latest (v3810) here

Thanks, Welshjim, for that head's up. I read "3310" as "3810 ", and clearly didn't read the whole thing.
