What line of inkjet printer has the lowest cost ink cartridge replacements? I'm interested only in black text printing. Quality of print, and speed are not important, because 99% of my output is for draft purposes.

Have you thought about using a dot-matrix printer for your rough printing. You should be able to pick up one for minimal $$. I have a Fujitsui DL1100 that I have used for 10+ years. Works just fine, a real workhorse. Replacement ribbons are approx. $12-13 CDN last forever and are available at just about any office supply store. Tractor paper (8-1/2x11) I get at Costco for approx. $20 CDN for a box of 5000 sheets.

I use the dot-matrix for misc. printing where quality is not critical (e-mails, drafts etc.) then use inkjet for better stuff.

    Good luck.

For my money, Epson is number one. Printhead is built into printer, making cartridges cheaper. Stay away from Lemark and HP, they want all your money and a promise for your first born son. Just my tcw. :)

I agree, HP and Lexmark will cost you the most in the long run. In addition to Epson, I'd throw in the Canon printers. I've always had good luck with them and they're relatively inexspensive to operate.

It would appear because ink cartridges have a miniature printed circuit attached, all that would be necessary is just refill the ink into the cartridge. Some people have tried successfully to do that, but found it messy and inconvenient.

Unfortunately, everytime one needs ink, the expensive printed circuit along with the ink holding cartridge is thrown away. Obviously, with all that money in ink cartridge business, it certainly does not motivate to change to conveniently refilling the cartridge method.
