Normal.dot is that blank document you see when you open Word. It's a hidden file so in order to see it in the file structure, you have to un-hide hidden files and folders.

    On XP, it's found in C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

    On Win9x it's found in C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Guess the easiest way is to open up a blank document, format it as you want and save it as normal.dot (File > Save As > Template)

What basic formatting changes do you want to make. If you go to format, font you can select the font you like and click the default button. You will get a prompt asking if you want to make this the default font. When you do this those changes will be applied to normal.dot.

With all three answers, I got what I wanted to know. I will format the blank and save it as the normal.dot template and assume that formtting will be on next time i call up the blank page.

I want to format fonts, tab indents, page numbers, filename etc.

I assume I can do that.

You can do that, If you save this as normal.dot everytime you open Word all of those changes will be applied.
You can also create a regular template and apply those changes and then use it when you like.
You can also record a Macro that will automatically perform those steps for you.
