Hope this is the right place to post this...

I need to be able to protect files located on a shared drive for our project.

I am administrator to this drive, which means I can request access for people, and I can make access changes to folders on the drive.

We have certain files (Word docs and notepad docs) that need to be locked down so that they cannot be changed, unless by an administrator.

I created a dummy folder and was able to go into the folder properties and changes them so that access was view only. No saves could be made in the folder, no deletions, etc. However, while non-administrators are locked down this way (we tested it), I was also locked out in the same fashion, even though the Administrator permissions are set to be able to do everything.

How can I get this to work right? Is there a way to password protect .txt docs?

    Any info would be great!

    Thanks!

Depends what you mean by "I ". If you are both a member of the administrators and another group that is denied access, you will be denied access.

    "No Access" overrides other permissions.

The combined permissions of NTFS will be applied to a user requesting access unless NO ACCESS is specified in which case the user is denied. ...least restrictive.

The combined permission of a SHARE will be applied to a user requesting access unless NO ACCESS is specified in which case the user is denied. ...least restrictive.

When accessing an NTFS file through a SHARE, the most restrictive BETWEEN THE TWO OBJECTS will be in effect.
