    Hello All,
Has anybody had any trouble downloading Spybot S&D? I have tried several locations with no luck...Could it be because I am using IE5??...I have about given up on IE6...Too many shutdown & error messages.

The download meter appears, but that's about it, no blue progress line, no timer. I notice that the Windows icon is turning in the upper right corner though. I have tried to give it ample time to download, but I can't find any thing in the temp files or the designated folder. I have tried to save file to disc & have tried to open file to computer. (my OS is Win98se)

    Sorry So Late,
I am having trouble with my OS...I tried the URL you posted and everything was going well for a few minutes, then a message simular to this popped up: This Program Has Performed An Illegal Operation And Will Be Shut Down...IE Caused an Invalid Page Fault At MSHTML.DLL At167:7ada 6243. My computer locks down after this kind of massage appears. I must have rebooted 1/2 dozen times just trying to post a reply message to BBS!...There were other error messages such as:....At 167: 7ada 777c9. There were other messages also but I didn't write them down. My computer has been behaving badly since I used a hodgepodge of reg. cleaners...Things got so bad that I have tried to reinstall W98se about 1/2 dozen times, but my OS is still unstable. The HD seems to check out ok after I downloaded a diagnostic boot disc from the HD maker...Not sure about the other parts...I am flying by the seat of my pants when it comes to system & non system diagnostics.

    Edit To Last Post,
I forgot to try "Save Target As... ", until now. I was able to download Spybot using this feature. What's the difference with "STA..." compared to left clicking??

    Thanks,
    J. M.

    P. S. I can't remember if I have had any trouble downloading .EXE's before.

Have you tried a repair of IE? That would probably help with the mshtml.dll error.

(Reg cleaners cause about half the computer problems I am asked for help on. I haven't found one yet that is flawless. MS would most likely supply one if they were needed and their reliability could be guaranteed.)

I have IE5, I don't think it has a repair option that I know of...IE6 caused me so much trouble that I decided to do without it. I used to use IE6 with little trouble until the reg. cleaner incident. After all the reformatting, FDISK, & reloading Windows that I have done, you would think the error & shutdown problems would go away! Last night I downloaded a program called Tuff Test To check out my hardware, but everthing checked out ok.

    P. S. Thanks for the tip about reg. cleaners, I will be more careful with them next time!

If you are running an OS other than XP then:

Add/Remove Programs > Internet Ecplorer > hit Remove and a dialogue box should pop up with the option to Repair.

I am using W98se...I tried Add-Remove Programs but there is no listing for Internet Explorer of any kind. I did try the Tools menu under System Information but it only has a listing for Windows Report Tool.

That's strange - I have just booted my other PC to 98SE and Add/Remove has an entry for IE 6 and the option I described. I would have thought that 5 would have been the same.

In IE try clicking on Help - the repair option may be there.

IE5 on my computer doesn't seem to have a repair option...I looked up the URL in the last post...It gave instructions to type: rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt " in the "Run" command box. It brought up the 3 option menu like you see when you want to repair IE6, but the only option availible to me was "Add A Component ". The other 2 options were dark shaded. I guess my only other option is to uninstall IE5 and reinstall it, but it is not listed in "Add/Remove Programs ". I guess IE5 was integrated into W98se CD Rom somehow??...Just guessing.

    J. M. :)

    P. S. No luck with help button either.

It has been awhile since I used Windows 98SE, but I remember repairing IE many times. I think if you go to Start>accessories> system tools you will find IE repair tool.
    Good luck

    Hi James
Sometimes when we upgrade to IE6 the nasties out there(and in) are then able to influence IE.
    uninstall any un-needed programs.
file sharing programs download utilitys, third party media players
Just to name a few======anything third party that effects IE.
I highly recommend getting ie6 with sp1,Be sure to read the read me text, much more reliable faster and more secure, then you would have the repair back to.
Now that you have SpyBot ? hopefully adaware and spywareBlaster things should be better.

I would first figure out how to get rid of any plugins, this time before upgrading, scandisk in thurough and defrag. and after a fresh boot clean or delete everything in windows temp, and might as well clear IE's cache history cookies to.

    Hello Lonny,
My OS as a whole is unstable...I even have shutdown & error messages offline. I'm thinking it must be a nonsystem problem such as a BIOS setting or something...Just guessing.

Does anybody know what would cause my OS to be unstable even after reformating & a clean install of W98se??
