How do I stop Windows from sensing an inserted CD, whether blank CDR or prerecorded audio, and asking me what I wish to do with it? I know precisely what software I plan to use, but first have to tell Windows to "perform no action" every time a disc spins, despite checking "take no action" and "always take same action" boxes a few hundred times...

    Go to My Computer.

Right click on the drive and select "Properties ".

    Click on the "Auto-Play" tab.

Configure there what you need to configure.

    Alternatively disable Autoplay :

To Disable CD Autoplay in Windows XP Pro

    [1] Start/Run/GPEDIT.MSC
    [2] Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System.
[3] Locate the entry for Turn Off Autoplay and modify.

Start/Run/Gpedit.msc/Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System. Check your settings in the right pane, Turn Off Autoplay (double click).

To Disable CD Autoplay, completely, in Windows XP Home

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Then go to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    Name: NoDriveTypeAutoRun
    Type: REG_DWORD

If NoDriveTypeAutoRun does not exist, create it and set its value to 145 (decimal).

    Or...

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
    "NoDriveTypeAutoRun "=dword:0x000000FF

    Start/Run/Regedit

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom
    AutoRun = 0

Thanks...I knew it was a simple matter of configuring drive behavior; I just need detailed paths to get where I'm going...

Hope simple menu paths aren't too elementary for this board; I need a place to ask the stupid questions sometimes!

    Most appreciative,
    Michael

Before you tell it to "perform no action" place a checkmark in the little box where it says "Remember this and do the same every time" or words to that effect! Then that dialog box will no longer appear.

Arpeggioh - no PC question is "too simple" for posting here. And I'll absolutely guarentee that if you have a question there are lots of others out there with the same question but not enough whatever to post for help with it.

Stupid is when you do not know but will not ask.
