    Hi!
I have win 98 SE on my laptop. On start-up I get the following messages:

Can't find device file that may be needed to run windpws or windows application. Also: registry or system.INI file refers to the drive file, but device file no longer exists.
hit any key to continue.... then a repeat of above with the following files names {?} each time:

    vnetsup.vxd

    vredir.vxd

    dfs.vxd

After a few times of hitting any key, it will stop prompting me and will go to the desktop screen. Everything seems to run okay. Do I need to try to reinstall win 98 SE? Or, just leacve this baby alone????
    Thanks for any help!
    Jacqui

Check your startup and see if it's pointing to any programs you may have uninstalled. They need to be reinstalled and then uninstalled properly.

Try this, right click on your Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop and choose properties or go to Networks in Control Panel.
Find Client for Microsoft Networks and remove it. Reboot your computer and go back in to your Network properties and add Client for Microsoft Networks again. You may be asked for your Windows cd. Put that in the drive or point to your cab files when it asks for the Windows cd.
Reboot again and see if the error goes away.
If that does not work try this.

Go to Start\Run type in SFC and press Enter. Select to extract one file from installation disk. Type in C:\Windows\System\Vnetsup.Vxd, click on Start in SFC, When it ask where to get it from, browse to the CDrom with win98 disk. If you have a Recovery CD, instead browse to C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. The windows files are sometimes copied there. Just follow the prompts.
Repeat for each file, they all go into C:\Windows\System.
You didn't select cancel in the middle of installing Dial Up Networking or Virtual Private Networking or something like that, did you?

Thanks for all of the help folks..... I'll try each one. I just realized I don't have my Win SE disk.. so I'll have to try the other options while I see if my son has my disk!
I was working on a network between my laptop and my PC, maybe...... I cancelled or something. Was using Laplink at first, now have the broadband DSL route..... I'll try this and get back here either way.
    Thanks again!
