Personally, I use Drive Image by PowerQuest for external backup. It can compress to 1/2 the used space of a disk. Also, I can extract files from the created image files if necessary.

You can get a copy of Drive Image 2002 for about $25 with some hunting.

For me, the program has ended a lot of aggravation. I don't reload any more. I just restore the whole thing. A lot of times Microsoft just won't let go in the System Restore!

I use the NTBackup Program you are discussing. It is not a system file restorer but does contain your programs and registry.

On more than one occasion I have used it to restore something that I had messed up! Works great for me.

The Windows backup program is on your XP installation disk, although it isn't installed by default. To install the backup program, put the installation disc into your CD-ROM drive and open it in Windows Explorer. Navigate to \VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP. In the NTBACKUP folder, double-click ntbackup.msi to install the program. Once you install the backup program, it will appear in Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools.

I tried the Back up facility and it seemed to work fine backing up data to another partition, but I wanted to backup to CD-RW.

Although not mentioned as an option this is possible - you need InCd or some packet writing software. Problem is that InCd and WinXP do not live hapilly together - the latest version 4 works just fine, but causes bsods if you ever run chkdsk on the HD formatted NTFS - no problem if FAT32.

    See this post
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20187

Now use Ghost which seems to work OK although it has not yet been put to the ultimate test - a restore.

I use Drive Image 2002. I create the images to another partition. I then burn such to a CD via a normal data burning program. If I have to use these CDs, I boot with floppies.

The process of burning the files as data seems to work more certain than attempting to burn directly to CD, which is hit or miss for me.

Because I use compression, I've found that CD image files for Drive Image are better if not burned from file images that were directly created after using a zeo fill/eraser program and defragging the drive.

Those images on the drive will restore just fine. But those same image files on CD have been faulty for me in the past, requiring me to use the hard drive files.

I found it is best to log onto the web for a minute after erasing and defragging. It's like it fluffs the drive or something!

    Pete,
Don't mean to 'stir the pot' :D BUT... I run XP and InCD on NTFS and use chkdsk on a fairly regular basis. I have not encountered these problems that you mention. (and yes I read the other post also). Could there be another factor in your particular equation causing the end result? (other software? or hardware?) I believe that Ahead has delivered a quality product (although I'm not impressed with your tech support experience). Just wonderin'... (and NO, I do not have any affliation with Ahead Software)

    Thanks, B - that's real interesting!

As I have the same problem on 2 PC's with same OS and both NTFS a hardware problem seems unlikely. Must take a look at the common software on each - I guess the answer lies there.

AceH - The Windows backup utility doesn't support backing up directly to a CD. You'll have to run the backup, telling it to save to a folder somewhere on the harddrive and then burn that backup file to CD.

    Miz,

It does if you follow the method outlined in my post above using InCd and a CD-RW which Windows sees as a drive - done it!

If you don't mind spending a little, Stomp's "Backup MyPC " is the old Veritas (Seagate) backup program... Works 100 x's better than the XP version! I shopped around and got it for $45.00.
